Press Release:

Firesafe Stillwater Conducts Wildfire Risk Home Assessment Training
Stillwater County, MT — Members of Firesafe Stillwater participated today in a hands-on wildfire risk home assessment training aimed at strengthening local capability to reduce wildfire threats to homes and communities.
The training was led by Carmen Borchelt of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC). Participants included personnel from Stillwater County Department of Emergency Services (DES), Columbus Fire Rescue mitigation crew members, the U.S. Forest Service, DNRC, and the Stillwater Valley Watershed Council.
The training focused on evaluating homes and properties for wildfire risk, identifying vulnerabilities in the home ignition zone, and providing practical mitigation recommendations to property owners. Attendees also completed a live, on-site home assessment to apply what they learned in real-world conditions.
Stillwater County Commissioner Jeff Ruffatto supported the effort by offering his home as the location for the practical assessment.
“This is exactly the kind of work that makes a difference before a fire ever starts,” said David Stamey, Chief of Stillwater County DES. “We’re building local capability across agencies and organizations to identify risk, educate homeowners, and take action. That’s how you reduce loss and keep people safe when fire season hits.”
Wildfire risk home assessments are a key component of community wildfire preparedness and align with ongoing efforts in Stillwater County to reduce risk in the wildland-urban interface. Firesafe Stillwater continues to work with local, state, and federal partners to expand mitigation, education, and preparedness initiatives across the county.
For more information on wildfire preparedness or to request a home assessment, contact Stillwater County DES, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, or Columbus Fire Rescue.
