This Memorial Day, the Columbus Fire Department joins our community in honoring the men and women of the armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day is a time to reflect on sacrifice, duty, and courage - values that resonate deeply with all who serve in uniform. We remember not only those who fell in battle, but also the families who carry their legacy forward with strength and grace.

As firefighters, we are reminded daily of the importance of service, protection, and standing ready when others need us most.

On Monday, we stand in solemn gratitude alongside our community, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that others might live in freedom.

From all of us at the Columbus Fire Department, we wish you a safe, meaningful, and reflective Memorial Day weekend.

When someone dials 911 on the worst day of their life, there’s comfort in knowing the men and women of Columbus Fire & EMS are already on the way.

Before the lights arrive … before the sirens echo through town … someone’s mother, father, child, friend or neighbor is depending on them.

And every day, they answer.

They walk into chaos with calm. Into uncertainty with training. Into heartbreak with compassion.

Whether it’s a serious medical emergency, a devastating accident, a child struggling to breathe or simply someone scared and needing help, our EMS professionals show up ready to serve.

Their work is measured in moments most people never see:
The steady hand.
The reassuring voice.
The lifesaving decision made in seconds.
The quiet conversation after the call is over.

This National EMS Week, we proudly recognize the paramedics, EMTs and firefighter/EMS personnel of Columbus Fire Department who dedicate their lives to protecting ours.

Thank you for the long nights, the missed holidays, the sacrifices your families make and the care you bring to this community every single day.

Columbus is stronger, safer and more compassionate because of you.

For Columbus Firefighter-Paramedic Thomas Rathje, serving the public goes beyond emergency calls - it’s about preparing others to save lives, too.

After a real-life CPR save involving a local student, Rathje is leading an effort to bring hands-only CPR training directly into high schools, starting with a recent session at Lakeview High School.

In just one class period, students are learning a skill that can make all the difference in a cardiac emergency.

One moment sparked it. Now it’s a mission.

This week we “light the night” with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s Light the Night Campaign. This year we honor 97 of our brothers and sisters along with their families who were lost in 2025. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks which was one of the largest, most devastating responses the fire service has ever seen. Everyday we honor our commitment to never forget our brothers, sisters, and their families.
