Throughout July the Kiwanis Club of Columbus welcomed a variety of community leaders and officials to speak to the club. They included Coroner Greg Merchant, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins, and realtor, humanitarian, and community promoter Colin Krieger, (or is it Krigler ;). Thank you to program chair Brad Stanback.

We welcome members and non-members alike to join us each Wednesday at noon at Lion Hills for food, fellowship, and insightful presentations.

The club will hold its summer business meeting on the 29th.

Entry Level Soccer Referee Courses Announced

Our 2026_2027 soccer season has begun. We began loading the first USSF Entry Level courses this morning. These are in Southaven, Tupelo, and Gulfport. We are waiting for final information on courses in the Jackson area and in the Delta.

You will go to this link and sign up for the location you are interested in and below that is an explanation of how the process works. The total cost of the Entry Level clinic is $90. It is two parts; one is the license fee, and one is the class fee. Once at the link below, select Entry USSF Referee - Never Been a USSF Referee before.

Anyone interested in becoming a referee (13 and older) will sign up for the Field Session location first. They should finish ALL online lessons prior to showing up for the clinic. If they do not, they will be allowed to attend the field session. However, they will have 3 days to finish the lesson. If they have not completed them by that time, they will be removed from that clinic and placed in a "hold "status". In order to continue their efforts to become a referee, they will be assessed an additional nominal fee to log in and finish their online lessons. Once completed, they will become a referee.

Long delayed post--the Kiwanis Club's small business month in May included a presentation from Avery Velek and Daniel Todd. The partners, pictured here with Avery's mom Cindy Buob, started Down to Game in 2020 with a storefront in Starkville. The business expanded in the Tuscaloosa market and last year bought Foxhole Comics in Columbus. It was great to hear their small business journey and learn about their business space.
