Local History Department at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System

Local History Department at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System Hours:
M-Th: 9am-5pm, F: 9am-2pm, and
Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month: 9am-2pm The Buckley Genealogy Room and The Billups-Garth Archives.

The Local History Department of the Columbus-Lowndes Library is divided into two major sections. In 1981 the library received a generous gift from Dr. George Buckley in memory of his wife, Margaret Latimer Buckley which greatly enhanced genealogy holdings and space. The Buckley Room houses the library's printed historical and genealogical materials. This room has over 5000 books, many periodicals

and approximately 500 reels of microfilmed census records and Columbus newspapers. Since the major focus is local history, many of the materials are on Lowndes County. Other counties in Mississippi and Alabama are very well represented. The library has Mississippi censuses on microfilm through 1910 with indexes through 1870. There is some microfilm for nearby Alabama counties and a few reels for other states. In addition to Mississippi and Alabama, the researcher will also find many genealogical books and periodicals on North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. Some areas of Texas, Arkansas, Florida, and Louisiana as well as some of the northeastern states can be researched here. The Buckley Room has an impressive group of bound family histories, books on the Civil war and on Indian and African American Genealogy and Columbus city directories. For novice genealogists, the collection contains a number of books which will answer many of the questions they might have as they begin their search. Some issues of local nineteenth and twentieth century newspapers are available on microfilm. The Columbus Commercial Dispatch from 1990 with an index can be used by researchers.

Congratulations to Local History Assistant, Melissa, for completing her MLIS (Masters in Library and Information Science) from the University of Southern Mississippi this May 2026.

Way to go!

06/01/2026

Archivist Mona Vance-Ali graduated with her MLIS (Masters in Library and Information Science) from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) over the summer of 2025.

Now, her final paper, titled "Disobedient Women: A Quantitative Analysis of Females in the Lowndes County, Mississippi Circuit Court Felony Criminal Cases
housed at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System Billups-Garth Archival Room, 1830-1899" has been published in the USM's Library Science program's journal called SLIS Connecting.

Her work explores the often overlooked history of women's relationship to crime, either as the perpetrator or the victim, in Lowndes County, Mississippi over the course of the 1800s. What type of crimes were women committing? What type of crimes were most often committed against women? How did that change over the 19th century?

FUN PHOTO FRIDAY: Today's image is from volume II of the World War II scrapbooks recently digitized and indexed by the Local History Department.

The scrapbooks consist of newspaper clippings largely documenting the lives of Lowndes County soldiers, both men and women, in training, their military service, awards, visits home, and casualties. The articles also detail the domestic front with local fundraising efforts, the birth of children, businesses, family visits with soldiers, and more.

The articles were published both in the 1940s as well as in the 1970s, the later articles printed as part of a column titled “Columbus News 32 Years Ago Today”.

To view indexes for volumes I and II visit https://www.lowndeslibrary.com/local-history-indexes.

The scrapbooks are online through the Mississippi Digital Library. For volume I, visit https://cdm17313.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/columbus/id/24016/rec/3. For volume II, click on https://cdm17313.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/columbus/id/24017/rec/4.

The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System (CLPLS) has completed the processing and digitizing of the Lowndes County World War II collection covering 1942-1978.

Now open to researchers, the collection includes nineteen black and white photographs of local soldiers, two scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, three war ration booklets, and one WWII Blue Star flag.

The two scrapbooks consist of newspaper clippings largely documenting the lives of Lowndes County soldiers, both men and women, in training, their military service, awards, visits home, and casualties. The articles also detail the domestic front with local fundraising efforts, the birth of children, businesses, family visits with soldiers, and more. The local articles were published both in the 1940s as well as in the 1970s, the later articles printed as part of a column titled “Columbus News 32 Years Ago Today”.

Archival staff indexed both scrapbooks to assist patrons when researching local names and organizations. Staff also uploaded the identified photographs of soldiers from the collection to their entries on the Findagrave.com database.

In addition, the two scrapbooks along with their respective indexes and the nineteen photographs are digitized and available on the Mississippi Digital Library (MDL). The CLPLS works with the MDL out of the University of Southern Mississippi to make collections housed in the library archives available online to researchers worldwide.
