Save Dingee We want to hold City government accountable for the destruction of a community landmark.

So, City staff, why aren't we following "normal development agreement procedures?" What was so extraordinary that you had to work so quickly?

And Alders Lawson, Motiff, and most especially Roelke... what have you now allowed the developer to foist on us because you were in such a rush?

06/05/2024

Tonight, the City Council voted to allow a Madison based developer to raze the farm on taxpayer dime. For those of you who voted for Michael Lawson, he didn’t listen to you. But that’s not the worst thing. The deciding vote in favor of development was cast by Amy Roelke who for months voted in favor of our proposal to restore the farm. We are shocked and heartbroken.

The City posted their agenda for Tuesday's Council meeting and the Dingee Farm is up for a vote. More to follow as we digest all of this, but the way this looks to us right now... if there is a yes vote on this Developers Agreement, the Farm is done for. Stay tuned.

If you are interested in reading it for yourself, the Developers Agreement is available in its entirety here (begins on Page 70): https://www.cityofcolumbuswi.com/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_06042024-2631

Good evening everyone! We've gotten a couple of questions about next steps given that the Farm appears to be on the agenda again. Short answer: we are not sweating this one.

After the last meeting, Brian saw the developer there in person. The developer was accosting at least one of our supporters outside the meeting. We also have it on good authority that he waited outside City Hall until closed session ended, stopped one of the Alders on their way to their car, and tried to convince them to support his plan. These do not strike us as the actions of someone who thinks they have this in the bag.

We ALWAYS encourage people to reach out to their Alders (and the Mayor) to speak their mind when it comes to the Farm. That said, we also recognize we've asked a lot of our supporters over the last 14 months. So, for this one, if you feel like speaking your mind at 6:30 on Tuesday -- absolutely feel free. But it would be somewhat of a shock if this is the end of the road.

Hi everyone,

Dave here. Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who came to the Council meeting on Tuesday.

I also wanted to clear up some miscommunication on our part and take responsibility for a muddled message. Tuesday was not a vote. It was a closed-session discussion which, in the past, meant that a vote was imminent. That, combined with the fact that we have two new Alders, is why I felt like public turnout was important here. That is why we asked people to come out and we are confident that the message was conveyed and received. So again, thank you!

Where are we now, then? The Farm will eventually come up on the Council's agenda again, this time for a vote. What direction the vote will take, and when the vote will be, remains to be seen. There may be more closed sessions between now and then, or there may not. We will all just have to keep our ears to the ground and wait to see how this pans out, for now.

If the City continues to take the development route, we could see a vote on whether or not to accept a Developer’s Agreement and sign a contract. We'd obviously hope that such a vote would fail. The Council could also put forward a measure to reject the developer proposal and explore alternatives. If that were to occur, we would of course be in favor.

There has been a lot of chatter about whether the City can legally back out at this point. The answer is yes, the City can back out. Alder Reid asked that exact question in open Council on April 1st and the City Attorney affirmed that this was possible. All they have decided at this point is that they want to pursue negotiations with the developer. They have not awarded a contract.

Finally, I think it would be good for all of us to have some grace with the new Council. The two brand-new Alders have 12+ months of background info to catch up on. Don't forget that only two people on the current Council voted in favor of razing the Farm (Alder Motiff and Mayor Hammer). We need to be firm, but also fair. That’s not to admonish anyone, it’s simply to highlight that we’ve entered a different phase in the fight to save the Farm. We still love that our supporters bring passion to the table!

In closing, thanks again to everyone who has taken time out of their day to talk with their Alders, comment in favor of saving the Farm, or appear at a meeting. We truly do appreciate it. We feel positive about the way forward. Hopefully, everyone’s efforts will bear fruit – sooner rather than later. Until then, see you at the Odd Food Truck Fest on Saturday!

We are unfortunately delivering some dire news:

In emails to Save Dingee supporters, both Alder Rostad and Alder Lawson have stated that they intend to vote in favor of the developer proposal to raze the Dingee Farm for housing.

In both cases, they seem to be doing this because they fear retaliation from the developer. Is this the kind of company we want doing business in Columbus? One that manages to scare two new City Council members into submission before their first month is even over? It also makes us wonder seriously about the legal advice that the Council and City staff are getting from the City Attorney. Especially given how he handled the last RFP process with us.

As Brian and I have said, we truly think our plan is a better plan for this property and for Columbus; however, we would support any plan that keeps this community icon intact. That has not changed. Please continue to email your Alders, we have gotten positive feedback that these messages are being received.

Even more so, we need people to once again speak before the Council today at 6:30pm. I know we’ve asked this before, but with two new Alders, we have a unique opportunity to have our voices heard anew. After public comment, the Council will inexplicably go to closed session (again) to decide whether or not to accept the developer’s proposal. Before the Council shuts itself behind closed doors and hides its reasoning for the umpteenth time… we’re asking for our supporters to please, once again, show up, and show our two new Alders that the support for saving Dingee remains unwavering. Otherwise, we believe that the fate of the Farm will be sealed.

Did you know that the Dingee Farm is already listed on the Wisconsin Historical Society website? It has been on there since even before this saga began last year. It's listed as the Thomas Smith Farmstead, named after its original owner.

If you search "1400 Park" you will also see that all the barns and outbuildings are also listed on the WHS site. Take a look:

Congratulations to our two new City Council members, Alder Ryan Rostad (District 1) and Alder Mike Lawson (District 2)!

In case you missed it, the April 2nd elections saw the departure of two pro-demolition voices. We can't speak for the new Council members, but we are looking forward to new voices in our local government.

(If anyone has a swearing-in picture for Alder Lawson, please pass it along, we'd love to post it!)

Remember: although the City voted to advance the developer proposal, nothing is set in stone yet. When Alder Reid asked in March, the City Attorney said flat-out that the decision to demolish the Farm can be reversed. We think it should be! Stay tuned for more.

The rear-most section of the home used to be a garage but was eventually turned into a living room. According to a family friend, that renovation occurred in the mid-1970s.

The farmhouse was definitely renovated over the years. One change is that the cellar stairway used to be in the front rather than the middle of the structure. As it is now, there’s a “stairway to nowhere” that comes down underneath the great room floor.

Apologies for the lack of content, it’s been pretty busy around here lately. Thanks to everyone who voted for change on Election Day. The Farm is still very much saveable and the next few weeks will tell us what direction things will go.

The City just voted to enter negotiations with Lamps Landing. That said, we have an election tomorrow, folks! The City Attorney himself said that the next Council can undo this decision and that the process leading to a binding contract would be measured in months, not days. This horrible decision can only be undone if the balance shifts in the Council. If you're passionate about the Farm, remember those who voted to sell this community icon for $1: Steiner, Motiff, and Mayor Hammer. Plus Alder Gray if he ever decides to return to politics. Vote, vote, VOTE accordingly. The fight isn't over.
