A statement regarding the recent ICE activity in Columbus.

We are aware of the recent reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity at a local restaurant earlier today. Neither the city administration nor the Columbus Police Department received any advance notice about this operation, and we were not aware it was happening. Because federal agencies like ICE operate independently, they are not required to notify local municipalities or law enforcement within their jurisdictions.

At this moment, we still do not know if anyone was taken into custody or how long these operations might continue in our area. We want to reassure the community that, in line with our local policies, the Columbus Police Department does not participate in federal immigration enforcement sweeps and have not entered into any agreement with federal law-enforcement to participate in such action. We are committed to keeping everyone informed and safe, and we will share verified updates as soon as we have more information.

Heads up, Columbus!

Water main and storm sewer work on Second Street will ramp up Sept. 1–8. Expect periodic lane restrictions and road closures throughout the project. A full closure at Jackson Street is planned for the evening of Sept. 8. Please follow detours and use caution in the area.

The timeline for completing the work is weather dependent, and inclement weather may delay progress within the designated schedule.

Heads up, Columbus!

A heat advisory will be in effect from 2 p.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Thursday across much of central, east central, north central, south central, southeast, southwest and west central Indiana.

Forecasters say peak heat index values may reach 105 degrees each afternoon, with little relief expected overnight. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity may increase the risk of heat‑related illnesses.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, limit time outdoors and check on neighbors and relatives.
