Meet Elected Official Mohamud Noor ✨

Mohamud Noor was born in Somalia in 1978 and fled to Kenya with his family due to the civil war. In 1999, they immigrated to the U.S., settling in Minnesota. Noor earned a B.S. in computer science from Metropolitan State University and worked as a system administrator for the Minnesota Department of Human Services. He also led the Confederation of Somali Community in Minnesota, advocating for Somali youth programs, job training, and mental health services.

In 2018, Mohamud Noor was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives and has been reelected since. Previously, he ran unsuccessfully against Phyllis Kahn and Ilhan Omar. Noor currently chairs the Human Services Finance Committee and focuses on reducing racial disparities in health care, education, and housing. He supports the “Driver’s Licenses for All” bill and has criticized Donald Trump’s anti-Somali rhetoric, while defending Ilhan Omar from similar attacks.

Noor’s policy priorities include job creation through the green economy, education funding reform, and supporting the Affordable Care Act. He has been endorsed by progressive groups and former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak.

Meet Elected Official Isaak Mohamed ✨

Isaak Mohamed is a Somali refugee who came to the U.S. in 2013 after fleeing the civil war in Somalia and spending time in a refugee camp in Uganda. In Barron, Wisconsin, he became the first Somali refugee to run for city council. After working at the Jennie-O Turkey Store, Mohamed now serves as a liaison for the Barron Area School District. His experiences in both Uganda and the U.S. have shaped his desire to bridge the gap between the Somali community and the broader population of Barron. He became a U.S. citizen in 2018 and aims to represent all Barron residents, not just the Somali community.

Meet Elected Official Ismail Mohamed ✨

Ismail Mohamed serves the people of Ohio’s House District 3, drawing on his personal experiences and legal expertise to advocate for an Ohio that uplifts everyone. Born in Somalia and raised in Central Ohio, Rep. Mohamed is a graduate of Northland High School and The Ohio State University, where he earned a degree in Political Science. He later made history by becoming the first Somali American attorney in Ohio after obtaining his Juris Doctor from OSU Moritz College of Law.

As a practicing attorney, Rep. Mohamed focuses on personal injury, immigration, and criminal law while also providing pro-bono services to those in need. His dedication to public service includes roles on the North-Linden Area Commission and the Columbus Civilian Review Board, where he worked to improve oversight and transparency in law enforcement.

Now a member of the Ohio State Legislature, Rep. Mohamed is committed to addressing key issues like small business development, affordable housing, public safety, and education. Alongside Rep. Munira Abdullahi, he made history as one of the first Somali Americans to serve in Ohio’s General Assembly.

Meet Elected Official Abdihakim Ibrahim ✨

Abdihakim is a Somali American immigrant who moved to the United States in 2014 and now resides in St. Louis Park with his wife, Idil, and their three children. As an active member of his community, Abdihakim serves on the St. Louis Park Police Advisory Commission and has been involved with both the St. Louis Park School District referendum campaign and the 2020 Census Complete Count Committee.

A dedicated community organizer, Abdihakim is passionate about improving the quality of education in his city. He brings a fresh perspective to the St. Louis Park School Board, advocating for educational equity and supporting students who face challenges. His commitment is to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

Meet Elected Official Sharif Haji ✨

Sharif Haji is a dedicated community leader and the executive director of The Africa Centre, where he has spent years working tirelessly to support his community. With a background in public service, Sharif played a key role in managing Alberta’s first Provincial Affordable Housing Strategy and the Primary Health Care Strategy through his work with the Ministries of Seniors, Housing, and Health.

Sharif’s commitment to building inclusive communities is reflected in his involvement with various organizations, including the Edmonton Multicultural Coalition, United Way, and the Centre for Race and Culture. He is also the co-founder of the Federation of African Canadians Economics (FACE), which helps Black businesses in Canada gain access to capital. Sharif’s leadership continues to make a meaningful impact in empowering and uplifting his community.

Meet Elected Official Ali Duale ✨

Ali and his wife fled Somalia in 1991 due to civil war, spending seven years in a Kenyan refugee camp before arriving in Canada to build a better life for their family. From 2004 to 2024, Ali worked with the Halifax Regional Fire Department, not only as a firefighter but also as the Diversity and Community Liaison Officer. His story of resilience and dedication is showcased at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, symbolizing his commitment to rebuilding his life.

Ali has been a tireless advocate for his community, playing a pivotal role in establishing a mosque and community centre for families and neighbors to gather. As a father of eight, he has been a strong supporter of youth, coordinating free basketball and swimming programs for immigrant youth. His community involvement extends to serving on several boards, including the Maritime Muslim Academy Board. Ali’s lifelong devotion to community service continues to inspire others.

Meet Elected Official Zaynab Mohamed ✨

Zaynab Mohamed is the DFL-endorsed candidate for the Minnesota Senate, a passionate advocate for working-class immigrant communities, and an organizer with a deep commitment to social justice. After immigrating from Somalia, Zaynab grew up in a working-class family on the Southside of Minneapolis, where she helped her family navigate healthcare, social services, and immigration support. These experiences shaped her dedication to improving systems that serve vulnerable communities.

Zaynab’s activism was ignited during the Trump Administration, when discrimination against Black and Brown communities surged. She began working with Ayada Leads, an organization focused on empowering Black immigrant women in political participation. Zaynab also served as the Community Advocacy Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), where she fought for police accountability and public safety reform.

Zaynab’s political work is driven by the belief that government systems should make life easier for everyone, not just the privileged few. Her candidacy for the Minnesota Senate is rooted in the desire to represent the voices of Southsiders, immigrants, BIPOC communities, and working-class Minnesotans, ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table and a voice in shaping public policy.
