Fridays from the 8 House Archives:
This week, we’re going all the way back to 1888.
Construction on the original Station 8 began in 1884, but due to funding delays, the station wasn’t completed until 1888.
The original 8 House was a two-story, two-bay station, with a bell and hose tower rising from the center of the building. It was addressed at the corner of N 20th St & Mt Vernon Ave.
The firehouse remained inservice until it was officially decommissioned in 1968. Eventually, a supermarket building was constructed around and integrated into the historic firehouse structure.
Finally, in 1990 The Franklin County Department of Job and Family Services established its current operations at 1055 Mount Vernon Ave.
A look back at where the history of the 8 House began.
