#DogOfTheWeek Foster is a super friendly, happy boy! He likes to walk right beside you and is always willing to stop for some head scratches. He loves giving kisses and getting cuddles. He's no small pup, but seems to think he's a lap dog! We just love his sweet and goofy personality.

Foster is ready to find a family who he can love for the rest of his life. Could this handsome guy be the right match for you? Come meet him to find out!

After over 900 days with us, last week's #CatOfTheWeek Burney left the shelter for his forever home yesterday! A sweet family who had recently lost one of their cats heard about Burney's story and decided they were going to be the ones to make sure he is loved for the rest of his days.

On top of that, Burney was our 100th adoption this year! Thank you so much to all of our supporters and adopters for helping us get animals like Burney into the loving, caring homes they deserve.

#HappyTails

August 2017. That's when #CatOfTheWeek Burney came through our shelter doors. Over 900 days ago. Burney is our longest shelter resident. He's around 8 years old now, which means he has spent about a third of his life living here. Burney deserves to find a REAL home!

Burney is one of the sweetest guys around. He loves pets, sleeping in comfy beds, playing with toys, and snuggling with his roomies. He can be a little shy when you first meet him, but give him a little while and he'll be begging you for some loving.

One of the reasons Burney hasn't had luck finding a forever home is because he's FIV+. But FIV+ kitties can certainly lead long, happy lives! They just need good nutrition, an indoor cat lifestyle, and proper veterinary care.

Burney has been waiting a long time for his perfect forever home and he's hoping he doesn't have to wait much longer. We would love to let you meet this sweet guy so he can show you why he should be the cat for you!

Two weeks ago, we were thrilled when one of our longest canine residents found a home. Annie spent 448 days at the shelter before a family walked in and fell in love with her immediately. Annie was doing really well in her new home. Unfortunately, her new owners found out that their residence did not allow pit bull breeds and they were forced to bring her back to the shelter. Their hearts were broken and so were ours.

We're making Annie our #DogOfTheWeek this week and we're hoping you can help us find the perfect family for her! She is a very well-mannered dog who just loves pets and belly rubs (don't miss the video of her in the comments!). We almost never hear her bark and she doesn't jump. She has had a hard time finding a home because she generally does not get along with other dogs. Annie really needs to go to a calm home with an experienced dog owner where she can be the only pet.

Annie is sure to reward her new owner with loyalty and love. This beautiful, sweet girl deserves a home where she can stay for good. Please help us find Annie a home by sharing this post or tagging someone you know who might be a good match! We will be open tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday from noon to 6pm, and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday. Stop by so we can introduce you to Annie!

#DogOfTheWeek Diego looooooves fetch! This handsome boy is FULL of energy and can't wait until he finds a family who's ready to help him use it all up. Diego is a strong pup and is still working on learning his manners, especially not jumping, so he would probably be best in a family without small children.

Do you know anyone who's looking for an athletic dog to keep them on their feet? Send them to us to meet Diego! He's smart and learns quick, he just needs someone to help him focus his energy. :)

#DogOfTheWeek Diego is an active, athletic pup! This guy has some energy and is more of a "go out and play fetch" dog than a "couch potato" dog. He would love to find himself a fun, active family.

Despite all his energy, Diego is a smart boy who seems to like to learn. He has come a long way with his manners since he came to the shelter a few months ago, but could be a really awesome dog with some focused attention!

Could handsome, playful Diego be the right match for your family? Come meet him to find out!

#CatOfTheWeek Florance is 7 years young and front declawed. She is the only female in a room of old men and acts like the queen of the room (which, of course she is). She's not one to pass up a treat or two or twelve, can hold down a good lap, and is a great conversationalist. She would be fabulous in a home with a human who enjoys a good chat as much as she does.

Interested in meeting Florance or any of the other great kitties here at the shelter? We are open today, Thursday, and Friday from noon to 6pm, and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday.

#DogOfTheWeek Snoopy loves to snuggle up and get pets but she's always down for a little play, too! We spent a little time learning what toys Snoopy likes best. She's not the best at fetch, but she sure likes to try!

Snoopy is such a sweet pup who's waiting patiently to find the perfect home. She would make a great family dog. Come out to the shelter to meet Snoops!

Say hello to our #CatOfTheWeek, Lulu! Lulu is one of our longest residents at the shelter. When Lulu first came to us, she was flea-infested with little hair left. She was very fearful of people at first and it took a long time before she became comfortable with human interaction. Once she learned people weren't so scary, we were finally able to see her goofy, sweet personality! Her favorite place to be is in her "plumpy" (what the staff calls her bed). Lulu has been to Indy Mega Adoption Event twice but unfortunately still has not been adopted.

Lulu is one of our FIV+ kitties. Her diagnosis is the only reason this gorgeous girl hasn't already been adopted. The diagnosis sounds scary, but FIV+ kitties can lead normal, long lives with good nutrition, an indoor cat lifestyle, and proper veterinary care. Lulu is about 3 years old but she's still got plenty of kitten energy. She is looking for someone who will enjoy petting her soft cotton hair, giving her plenty of toys to play with and showering her with the love she truly deserves!

We'd like to send a great big "THANK YOU" to our friends at Farrell's Extreme Bodyshaping - Columbus, Indiana! On Saturday morning, they held the "Un-Fur-Get-A-Bowl" where they worked to raise money and bring in items for the shelter by hosting a fun, team-based workout. Their members were able to raise $1000 that we will put right back into finding homes for the animals in our care. Thanks so much to FXB for hosting and to all of its members who participated! Our animals are sending lots of slobbery kisses and purrs your way.

#DogOfTheWeek Snoopy is a super sweet, female pit mix who's about 4 years old. She is great with people and loves kids! She is good with most other dogs as long as they are not too pushy. Snoopy loves to play and go for walks, but her favorite thing to do is cozy up with you on the couch.

Snoopy is so ready to find a family of her own! She'll show you how much she appreciates you with lots of love and lots of kisses.

We've gotten a little behind on sharing your submitted #HappyTails! Here's a sweet one that Alyssa sent in about her pup, Charlie:

"I wanted to share my happy tail about my rescue, Charlie (formerly Georgie). I brought Charlie home in November 2013 and he is the sweetest pup! He has been fantastic around kids and other dogs since day 1. Charlie enjoys hiking with his family, soaking up the sun, playing ball and napping. I am forever grateful for Bartholomew County Humane Society for taking care of my sweet boy until we found each other."

We are so happy that you and Charlie found each other! Here's to many more happy years! :)

If you'd like to share your #HappyTail to help inspire someone to rescue a family member of their own, message us your story and pictures, or email us at [email protected].

A belated post for last week's #CatOfTheWeek, Pretzel. When you first open the door to Pretzel's enclosure, she'll no doubt head back to the corner and give you a wary stare. But it honestly does not take too long to win this sweet girl over! After a few minutes of patience and letting her decide you're not going to try to pick her up (this is the ultimate betrayal in her eyes 😂), she'll come right up and headbutt you for some pets. We mentioned last week that she likes to play with her neighbors. Her upstairs neighbor kept booping her on her head while we were trying to get this video, but Pretzel didn't seem to mind too much. :)

We are hoping some kind, patient individual decides to give Pretzel the chance she deserves. It's easy to pass her up for the other kitties who are sticking their paws out for you or meowing up a storm. But give this girl a chance and she's sure to win your heart!

Update: Maddie is adopted!

#DogOfTheWeek Madeline isn't the most graceful dog there is, but she sure is determined! She comes zooming as fast as she can when she hears it's time for her walk. This special girl just passed up her one year anniversary in the shelter. We are hoping as hard as we can that we can find the right family for Maddie, who will love her just the way she is.

Are you interested in learning more about Maddie, or do you know someone who might have a place in their heart for this sweet and sassy girl? Give us a call or come visit between noon and 6pm tomorrow. Help us find Madeline her happily ever after!

We wanted to give you all an update on Greta, the poor pup we posted on a couple weeks ago. She had x-rays and bloodwork done. Unfortunately, we did not receive good news on her results. There are spots on her lungs that the vet believes are cancerous. The vet did not recommend that she be put under general anesthesia to remove the tumor on her abdomen, as it is probably secondary to what they saw in her lungs.

Although this is not the news we were hoping to receive, we are thankful that Greta can spend her remaining time in a foster home. Her foster mom, Nancy, is giving her the best care and lots of love.Thank you so much to Nancy for giving Greta the compassionate end of life care that she deserves. Nancy said she is doing well, seems to be gaining strength and walking better, and even ran a short way yesterday!

Also, thank you to everyone who donated to contribute to the care of Greta. We are so grateful for your big, kind hearts!

Update: Maddie is adopted!

Gorgeous Madeline is this week's #DogOfTheWeek! Madeline came to us barely able to walk due to a degenerative disease called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (say that 5 times fast) affecting the cerebellum, which helps coordinate movements. Our volunteers and staff have spent time to help her to gain some strength. Now she's able to get around on her own, but she still struggles with her balance.

Madeline is such a sweetheart! She LOVES attention and she loves going for her walks. She can be a sassy girl, and she'll let you know when it's time to pay attention to her or give her another stuffed toy to play with. There's no medication or treatment for her disease. Because it's degenerative, she has less time left in her life than she deserves. Shouldn't she get to spend it in a loving home and not here in the shelter? To give Maddie her best chance, she needs a high quality diet, regular vet visits (keeping up on all vaccinations, preventatives, etc.), and regular exercise. She can't walk for too long but she needs walked consistently to make sure her legs stay strong.

Madeline won't be the easiest dog you've ever had, but she'll pay you back for picking her with her happy, goofy, loving personality. Do you have room in your heart and your home for Madeline?

First and foremost...this post is not intended as a mean or hateful message. I honor what the humane society do to help with animals and people looking to adopt. With that said we went to visit and look into a possible adoption. We have a recused cat that is 3-4 years old that is spayed and declawed on her front feet only. I completely understand how they feel about declawing pets....and that's fine. But when they allow people to come and spend time with the animals and consider doing an adoption without any kind of written or verbal understanding they won't allow you to adopt if you planning on declawing after spending time with the animals and filling out the application. We went there with nothing but the best intentions of helping them and helping a animal find a good loving home. Only to leave with our hearts broken and making us feel like we are the worst people ever....please put up a sign and let it be known that you policy is you won't adopt out if you plan on declawing...save yourself and others the time and heartache we just experienced. Thank you for allowing us to spend some time with your fuzzy faced friends.
