πŸ•°οΈ Flashback Friday πŸ“šπŸ¨

Take a step back in time to one of downtown Columbus's longtime businesses! Established in 1869, William N. Munroe & Company was a popular book and stationery store located next to the Gilmer Hotel on Main Street. But it was much more than a bookstore! Customers could also find pictures, picture frames, wallpaper, newspapers, periodicals, school supplies, and artist materials. πŸ–ΌοΈπŸ“°βœοΈ

Above the store was the River View Hotel, offering lodging for travelers visiting Columbus. William N. Munroe operated the business for more than 35 years before selling it shortly before his death in 1905, leaving behind a legacy as one of the city's early merchants.

πŸ“š Imagine browsing this store over 150 years ago! What do you think you would have picked up? If your family has stories about old downtown Columbus, we'd love to hear them! ❀️

πŸŽ‰πŸ“š Celebrating 40 Years of Mother Goose! πŸ“šπŸŽ‰

Today, we are celebrating an incredible milestone: 40 years of Mother Goose with the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System! That’s right! Mother Goose began her long and amazing career with CLPLS on August 26, 1986, and 40 years later, she’s still bringing the magic of story time to our community! πŸ’›πŸ“š

For four decades, Mother Goose has filled our library with stories, songs, laughter, and learning. Generations of children have grown up attending her story times, and for so many families in our community, Mother Goose and the library simply go hand in hand. Forty years means thousands of stories shared, countless little readers encouraged, and more special memories than we could ever count.

Mother Goose, thank you for giving so much of yourself to our library and our community for 40 wonderful years. We are incredibly grateful for the joy and magic you continue to bring to our littlest readers each week.

Please join us in celebrating Mother Goose and congratulating her on 40 amazing years of service! πŸŽ‰πŸͺΏπŸ“–❀️

Play is serious learning! πŸ’›At the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System, we believe that parents and caregivers are a child’s first and most important teachers. That’s why our Toddler & Baby Learn & Play is about so much more than storytime.

Each Monday morning, little ones and their grown-ups can enjoy songs, movement, stories, interactive play, and time with friends. These early experiences help children build language, social, motor, and emotional skills, all while doing what they do best: PLAY! πŸ§ΈπŸ“šπŸŽΆ

It’s also a chance for parents and caregivers to connect with one another, share resources, and build their own community.

Join us every Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the downtown library. Come learn, play, connect, and grow with us! πŸ’š

πŸ•°οΈ Flashback Friday ☎️

Before smartphones, texting, and even direct dialing, there were the "Hello Girls!" πŸ’› In 1905, the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company opened operations in Columbus. The local exchange was located at 509Β½ Main Street and employed around 20 people. Managed by J. M. Thornberg, the office handled both telephone calls and commercial telegrams for the community. πŸ“žβœ‰οΈ

The telephone exchange relied on a multiple switchboard with a double-metallic wire system, where operators manually connected calls by plugging lines into the appropriate circuits. The young women pictured here were affectionately known as "Hello Girls" because they greeted callers with a cheerful "Hello?" as they connected each call.

Do you remember when telephone operators connected your calls? We'd love to hear your memories and stories in the comments!
