Foster parents need encouragement and support. Just one expression of gratitude can help inspire them to keep doing the work of helping people heal.

In honor of all of the selfless, amazing foster families, please share a word of gratitude below.

Tag the foster parent then share for others to share also.

May is National Foster Care month and we want all foster parents to know how much we appreciate their service to youth and families.

Read me!

We have been HAMMERED with referrals for youth needing homes. Because if the need, our team across the state has stepped up to a challenge. NYAP Indiana is 35 years old this month. We are all taking as much time as possible tomorrow, April 26th to solely focus on placing youth in homes. We have to get these youth out of shelters and into homes ASAP.

1. We need all the homes we can get!
2. We need getting to please answer your phones.
3. We have a TON of homes on hold, taking a break. We need anyone who can to please come off hold.
4. We need anyone at max capacity who wants to squeeze one more in, to please let us know! We will do our best to make it happen.
5. Please be patient with us. You may receive duplicate calls or many, many calls. We have a lot of hands in the pot!
6. Don’t hold beds for youth who “might come” when we have a youth who definitely needs a home.

The phones will be lighting up tomorrow.

Who will be ready? Share your openings below!

BCSO Sergeant Andrew Whipker is mentoring Columbus North High School Senior Cole Hopkins for his Senior Project. His project is to collect teddy bears and other stuffed animals for the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office to hand out to children during critical incidents.

Cole is placing collection bins at various businesses throughout the community and there is a bin in the lobby of BCJ.

On 4/2/2022 from 11:00-1:00, Cole and Sgt. Whipker will be in the Sheriff’s Office North Lot (weather permitting) for a drive-thru collection. Please consider donating any new or gently used stuffed animals for his project and place them in the bin or see Cole and Sgt. Whipker during the drive-thru collection.

‘Perhaps the reason teens isolate themselves when they're overwhelmed instead of coming to us with their problems, is because when they're toddlers we isolate them when they're overwhelmed instead of helping them with their problems.

When our kids are small and trying to manage emotions - they can't express what they are feeling. They throw tantrums, they throw things, they have meltdowns, they scream and they whine. This is their way of communicating with us. They need help to organize, process and express their feelings in a healthy way. And society tells us we should punish them for this. Send them to their room, put them in timeout, s***k them.

We teach them and train them not to show their emotions. Don't whine. Don't complain. Your feelings are wrong. Be quiet. Eventually they stop expressing their emotions to us because we told them over and over again we didn't want to hear it. For so long they needed to deal with it alone. Alone in their room, their chair, their corner.

And then they turn into teenagers and we expect them to feel safe talking to us. We expect them to know that NOW it's okay. They are subconsciously wired to think the opposite because this is what they grew up learning.

Give your child permission to feel. Let them know their feelings are valid and that you care, no matter how small. Make sure they know that they are heard.

Pretty soon meltdowns over crayons will turn into breakups, heartbreak, s*x, or even depression. You want your child to know that you will always hear them, no matter how small. You are their safe space.’

Not listening is rarely an active choice to make the speaker upset. If a child is not listening, get curious about why. What is getting in between the verbal message and the child’s brain? Then adjust your proximity, tone, volume, simplify it, make it visual, but before all this, make sure the child feels comfortable and safe.
