📢 Update to the June 9th Council Meeting Agenda Packet

Documents that were inadvertently left out of the original agenda packet that was generated and published on Friday at 5:00 pm have been added.

City Attorney’s Agenda Item #12 - 1st Reading: REZN-04-26-0956: An Ordinance amending the text of Unified Development Ordinance of the Columbus Code (“the UDO”) to provide for a Mill Redevelopment Zoning District in the Bibb City Area; and for other purposes. (Planning Department recommends conditional approval and PAC recommends approval.) (Councilor Garrett)

Why was this change made?

The supporting ordinance and agenda report for Item #12 on the City Attorney’s Agenda was not attached to the original packet.

You can view these documents accessing the link provided. Scroll down to the City Attorney’s Agenda and click or tap on #12. This should take you directly to the documents mentioned.

We encourage you to review the documents and stay engaged with your local government—your involvement matters! 🏛️💬

🌟🏛️️ What an exciting morning! 🎉🙌

Today, the Clerk of Council had the opportunity to meet with our summer interns and share information about how our local government works! 📚✨

We talked about how Columbus became a consolidated government, the roles of our eight district councilors and two at-large councilors, Council meeting schedules, and the different sections of a Council agenda so they can better understand what’s happening during meetings and feel more confident attending in the future. 🏛️🗂️

One of the most important messages I shared was this: get involved! 💡Local government impacts our daily lives, and we need young people to be engaged, informed, and willing to help shape the future of our community.

I also challenged them to look at how the City shares information and to provide suggestions on ways we can better connect with and engage younger generations. 📱💬 Their perspectives are valuable, and fresh ideas are always welcome!

The future of Columbus is bright when young leaders are willing to learn, ask questions, and get involved. 🌟❤️

💭 A month or so ago, a citizen who was not very pleased with me told me that I’m known for “stepping out of my place and doing too much” and that I create more work for myself than necessary.

My response?

“You’re absolutely right!”

I went on to explain that I do it because I’m simply not satisfied with being mediocre or accepting anything less than excellence.

Now, I can tell you that response was not received particularly well… but I stand by it today just as much as I did then. 🤷‍♀️

The entire reason I started this page was to provide information to our citizens. Sure, I could simply post a link and say, “The agenda is available” or “The minutes have been published.” But is that really enough? 🤔 I don’t believe it is!

If you don’t understand what you’re looking at, what’s the point?

If you don’t know that summary minutes are required to be available within two business days after a meeting adjourns, how can you hold me accountable if they aren’t? If you don’t know how the process works behind the scenes, how can you know whether we’re doing our jobs effectively?

For years, I’ve recognized the need to share information and help educate citizens about our local government processes and what happens “behind the curtain.” As Clerk of Council, I now have the opportunity to do that. 🏛️✨

I wish I had more time to do it. If you’ve noticed, most of my posts and responses happen after business hours. That’s because during the day we’re busy serving Council, supporting boards and committees, managing records, preparing agendas, and keeping things moving. There just never seem to be enough hours in the day. ⏰

In fact, when my husband asks how my day was, my response is often somewhere between exhausted laughter and complete disbelief. 😂☕️

But I truly believe that transparency, communication, and education matter. As we continue improving and streamlining operations in our office—getting ahead of issues before they become problems—we get one step closer to the vision I have for serving our community.

So yes, I WILL CONTINUE “doing too much.” 😊

But if it helps even one citizen better understand their local government, then it’s worth it!

I am also known for being quite stubborn, so exhaustion or negativity is not going to stop me. 😉

Thank you for following along, asking questions, and allowing us the opportunity to share the work that often happens behind the scenes. ❤️

📢 An Update on Board, Commission & Authority Applications

Yesterday, a dedicated citizen brought to our attention concerns from individuals who have submitted applications to serve on boards, commissions, and authorities. We appreciate those who took the time to share their feedback and concerns. 🙏

After reviewing the comments, it became clear that many applicants were expecting additional follow-up after submitting their applications. To better understand the experience, we submitted a test application and confirmed that an automated response is sent to all applicants. 📧

The message stated:
"Thank you for submitting your application to serve on a board or commission for Columbus, GA. Your application will be kept on file for one year, and we will contact you if your qualifications are a fit for any position."

After reviewing this message, it became apparent why many applicants were disappointed. The response creates an impression that applications are actively reviewed and matched based on qualifications, which has not been the practice since the implementation of our current board management software in 2019/2020. I sincerely apologize for that misunderstanding. 🤝

The good news is that we immediately contacted our software provider, received instructions on how to update the automated response, and have already made a temporary change. ✅

We also recognize that the entire process needs significant improvement, and we are committed to making it better. 💡

With the demands of back-to-back Council meetings over the past nine weeks, budget discussions, and numerous other important matters before Council, we are unable to immediately dedicate the time and attention this process deserves.

The final Council meeting in June will be held on June 16th. After that, we should have enough breathing room to allow us the opportunity to focus on this issue and begin implementing meaningful improvements. 📋

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support of the Clerk of Council's Office. We remain committed to earning your trust every day because trust is earned, not given! ❤️
