Ever think about about becoming a volunteer for your community? Stop in and say hi and see what it’s about.

America's Volunteer Firefighters: The Backbone of Our Communities

When most people think about the fire service, they picture firefighters rushing to emergencies—but many don't realize that the majority of those firefighters are volunteers.

Across the United States, approximately 635,100 volunteer firefighters serve their communities, making up nearly 62% of our nation's firefighting force. More than 80% of fire departments depend on volunteer personnel to protect approximately 170 million Americans, saving local communities an estimated $46.9 billion every year.

These numbers tell an incredible story of dedication, but they also reveal a growing concern.

Volunteer fire departments across the country are experiencing declining membership, increasing training requirements, rising operational costs, and greater demands for emergency response. As communities continue to grow, the need for volunteers has never been greater, yet recruiting and retaining new members has become increasingly difficult.

Here in Hardin County, our volunteer firefighters leave their jobs, their families, and their personal lives behind at all hours of the day and night to answer your call for help. They do it not for a paycheck, but because they believe in serving their neighbors.

Supporting volunteer fire departments means more than simply thanking them. It means recognizing the challenges they face, encouraging others to volunteer, advocating for sustainable funding and long-term planning, and ensuring these departments have the personnel, equipment, and resources necessary to continue protecting our communities.

The Hardin County Fire Chiefs Association remains committed to educating our communities about the vital role volunteer firefighters play in public safety. Together, we can ensure that the proud tradition of volunteer fire service continues for generations to come.

Volunteer firefighters don't just protect our communities—they are our neighbors, our friends, and our family. They answer the call when others are running away. They deserve our appreciation, our support, and our commitment to ensuring they can continue answering that call safely and effectively.

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of former Colusa County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Dean Pearson. He dedicated many years of honorable service to the citizens of Colusa County, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him. His commitment to public service, leadership, and the Sheriff’s Office will not be forgotten.

Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
