I was involved in the meeting with Caltrans, and unfortunately, once they determine a tree is a liability, it’s pretty much over.
My home will be losing a beautiful tree that is more than 120 years old. That tree has watched over my family for the past 30 years, so it’s hard not to be emotional about losing something with that much history and meaning.
On a positive note, negotiations are ongoing between Caltrans and the City regarding a tree replacement agreement. While Caltrans’ policy is not to replant, the City has offered to assume the liability and have new trees planted.
There’s no question this will change the look and feel of Colusa. It’s heartbreaking to see a piece of our community’s history disappear, but my hope is that we can reach an agreement, replant, and begin restoring our gateway as soon as possible.
Sometimes progress comes with a cost. My hope is that, together, we can make sure that cost doesn’t mean losing the character and beauty that makes Colusa special.

Colusa's 10th Street corridor will soon look much different.

Caltrans plans to remove 43 mature American elm trees along 10th and Market streets after an arborist assessment identified safety concerns, structural deterioration, decay and a history of limb failures.

City officials met with Caltrans to discuss the removals and what comes next for sidewalks, replacement trees and landscaping along the corridor.

PROVE IT OR LOSE IT!

Four years ago, the citizens of Colusa voted to approve a 1% general sales tax increase focused on improving our city's infrastructure. The measure included an oversight committee and, in essence, was a four-year "prove it" commitment.

On July 21, the City Council voted to place the measure back on the ballot for another four-year "prove it" period.

So, what has your investment accomplished?

With the revenue generated by this measure, the City has been able to apply rubberized asphalt preservation treatments to every street south of Webster Street, along with several other high-priority areas. These improvements help extend the life of our roads while putting us in a stronger position to compete for future state and federal grant funding.

In addition, we've completed the full rehabilitation of Wescott Road, built new restrooms at Veterans Park, and are preparing for the complete reconstruction of 8th Street from Harris Street to the High School, including new sidewalks and a bike lane.

I believe these projects demonstrate that your tax dollars have been put to good use.

Unlike a parcel tax, a general sales tax is also paid by people who shop, dine, or purchase fuel in Colusa but don't live here. That means visitors help invest in our community alongside residents.

The reality is that this tax is the primary path forward for continued investment in maintaining and improving our streets. If renewed, Colusa's sales tax rate would be comparable to neighboring communities like Williams and Marysville, while still remaining lower than cities such as Chico and Sacramento.

Some have criticized the pace or sequence of these projects. That's understandable, but we're following a state-approved pavement management plan that allows us to maximize grant opportunities and stretch every local dollar as far as possible.

I can't imagine the long-term consequences of stopping now and allowing our infrastructure to fall further behind.

Think about it. Is an extra 75 cents when you fill up your gas tank, an extra 12 cents on a value meal, or an extra 4 cents on a cup of coffee worth safer, smoother streets and continued investment in our community?

That's a question every voter will have to answer for themselves.

WESCOTT ROAD

For 13 years, I've always said, "I'm not always going to tell you what you want to hear, but I am going to tell you the truth." And I hope I've shown over the years that I wont just categorically defend the city if I think something isn't right.
So here's the truth, at least from my perspective: the Wescott project has been a bit of a s**t show.
The reality is that, in a small jurisdiction like ours, we're bound by law to award projects to the lowest responsible bidder. And once large projects like this begin, there are often unanticipated issues that come up.That doesn't make the frustrations any less real, but it does provide some context.
What I can tell you is that our City staff is working incredibly hard every day to make this project as successful as possible. If we can all keep our eyes on the bigger picture and envision the finished product, I truly believe it will be a positive addition to our community. These temporary inconveniences will eventually be forgotten.
I also know, from experience, that the first comments on this post will probably be negative—they usually are. But I believe community is bigger than politics, bigger than disagreements, and bigger than City Hall.
We all want what's best for Colusa. If we can stick together, show each other a little grace, and focus on the outcome instead of just the obstacles, we'll be in a much better position to create the kind of positive change our community deserves.

🚧 ROAD CONSTRUCTION NOTICE – WESCOTT ROAD 🚧

Beginning Monday, July 6, the City of Colusa will begin a full rehabilitation of Wescott Road. The existing roadway will be completely ground out and repaved to provide a smoother, safer driving surface.

Our goal is to complete paving by Friday, July 10, weather and construction conditions permitting. Final striping and other finishing work will be completed over the following few weeks.

I've seen recent posts, and I too find the water situation in Colusa frustrating. Especially when you consider that the primary reason that this issue has gone on for decades is that the odor comes from levels of manganese and iron naturally occurring in our water supply. So unless we relocate the town, there will always be some issues. Then, when the water is treated with chlorine to mitigate the smell, it results in brown water.
Recently, a new well project is underway to help alleviate the problem, but during that process, water pressures are inconsistent, which causes sediment to move in the system and results in brown water. The piping delivery system is 100 years old in areas, and not feasible to just tear out and replace. I'm not suggesting to just be patient and trust that this is a priority, but maybe understand that the city is actively trying to fix an issue that has existed for over 60 years, is only afordable through grant funding, and is clearly not an easy fix.
Finally, as the late Kirk Kelleher would say "don't trust us!...come to meetings and be heard!"
