Order Native Plants Today – While Supplies Last!

The Colusa County Resource Conservation District (CCRCD) is thrilled to announce a Native Plant Sale organized by Amalia Gomez, a senior at Colusa High School. As part of her Senior Project, Amalia is hosting this sale to help enhance pollinator and monarch habitat in residential gardens, farms, and ranches across Colusa County.

CCRCD is proud to support Amalia by providing native plants commonly featured in our hedgerow projects. These species are:
✔ Drought-tolerant
✔ Pollinator-friendly
✔ Beneficial for wildlife

Now is the perfect time to plant these multi-beneficial plants and make a positive impact on local ecosystems.

🌱 Soil Health in Action! 🌱

Over the past few weeks staff from our local RCDs, along with our partners have been out in the fields collecting soil samples. This ongoing effort is part of a training led by our Sac Valley Soil Hub Coordinator and supports a broader soil health metrics study through the California Farm Demonstration Network (CFDN).

Not only is this a great opportunity to build technical skills, but the data we're collecting will help paint a clearer picture of soil health across the Sacramento Valley. We’re proud to be contributing to science that supports regenerative, climate-smart practices on working lands.

Huge thanks to the producers and landowners partnering with us to make this work possible—we truly appreciate your support!

🌱 Stonyford Library/Sheriff's Office Clean Up Update! 🌱

We're excited to share that the garden bed is officially complete, thanks to an incredible team effort! A big shout out to Wycoff Construction for donating the gravel and to the Colusa County probation program for sending extra hands to spread it.

While it may look a little bare right now, eventually the native plants will bloom, and the garden will be full of life and beauty once again. 🌿

Check out the photos of the final product, and thank you to everyone who supported this project. If you want to get involved in future efforts, feel free to reach out!

Together we're making a difference!

What a Day at the Sacramento Valley Regional RCD Fall Meeting!

On November 13th, Colusa County RCD had the honor of hosting the Sacramento Valley Regional RCD Fall Meeting. RCD staff, board members, and partners gathered to share ideas and collaborate on innovative conservation practices.

The day was filled with incredible moments, including the Regional Speak-Off Contest, where students delivered inspiring speeches on the topic, “What is the role of agriculture in meeting California’s climate goals?”

To support these amazing students on their journey to the state finals, we held a raffle auction that successfully raised funds for their efforts. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this cause!

We also want to give a special shoutout to Colusa County’s Speak-Off winner, Makayla Rodriguez, for her inspiring speech and passion. Best of luck at the state finals in December—we’re cheering you on!

On behalf of the entire Colusa County RCD staff, THANK YOU to everyone who attended and helped make this event truly special.

Dust Bowl Roots

In 1935 the U.S. government created the Soil Conservation Service in response to the Dust Bowl. However, they struggled getting the financial and technical support at the federal level to farmers and ranchers in the field. So they created Soil Conservation Districts. Today, the SCS is now the Natural Resource Conservation Service, and SCD’s are now Resource Conservation Districts. As an RCD, we help bring federal funding and technical assistance to farmers and ranchers to help implement conservation practices and practical agricultural solutions to problems farmers face every day.
