Colusa County in the heart of the Sacramento River Valley is in the north Central Interior of California, bordered to the west by the Coastal Mountain Range and to our east the Sacramento River. Untouched by massive city development, farm and farm related industry make up 25 percent of total employment, the highest in the Sacramento Valley. Although the county is interested in attracting a range o

f industries, its fundamental strategy is to build on its growing agribusiness base. Colusa County is located on Interstate-5 and State Highway 20, the main north/south & east/west thoroughfares running across her centerline. With our close proximity to the State Capitol, the Sacramento International Airport is approximately 30 minutes south of the county line. The 7,000-foot peak of Snow Mountain sits on the County's western edge in the Mendocino National Forest. Traveling down from the mountain, one passes the rangelands that cover much of the County's western third. About 10 miles west of Interstate-5, these foothills ease into the rich, fertile soils of the Sacramento Valley. The Sacramento River, with a watershed covering much of Upstate California’s interior, washes the county's eastern boundary.

Honoring Correctional Officers Week – Thank You, Colusa County Correctional Staff

If you know a correctional officer, take a moment this week to thank them.

As we recognize National Correctional Officer Week, we honor the men and women at the Colusa County Jail who show up every day and do a job that most people will never fully understand.

Even though we are a smaller facility, the Colusa County Jail faces many similar challenges as larger jails. The staff continues to rise to the occasion every single day. Their hard work, dedication, and teamwork are what keep the facility safe and running smoothly.

Correctional officers stand on the front line of public safety. The job comes with real risks, long hours, and stress that often goes unseen. But through it all, they continue to show up for their team, their community, and the individuals in their care.

They do more than maintain order. They mentor, support one another, and help create opportunities for change. Whether it’s training a new team member, responding to a tough situation, or helping someone take a step in the right direction, their work matters.

At the Colusa County Jail, there is pride in the team and the direction it is going. Through training, safety improvements, and a focus on leadership and growth, they are building a stronger future together.

As this week is celebrated, it also marks a major milestone, the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office 175th Anniversary. This reflects a long history of service and commitment to the community, and today’s correctional staff continues to carry that legacy forward.

To every correctional staff member, thank you! They are the backbone of the facility, and their dedication does not go unnoticed.

This week, and every week, their work is appreciated.

This achievement is part of a long and unique history in Colusa County. When California was first divided into counties in 1850, Colusi County, later renamed Colusa, was among the original 27. Law enforcement began shortly after, with the appointment of the first sheriff in 1851.

In 1854, a small two-story wooden jail and courtroom were built on Market Street. By 1878, a larger jail was constructed next to the courthouse, connected by a walkway incarcerated persons famously called the “Bridge of Sighs.” That facility served the community for over 80 years until it was replaced in 1962 by the jail on Bridge Street.

This project was made possible through a state grant from the Board of State and Community Corrections, assistance by VANIR Construction Management with construction completed by Broward Builders, Clark and Sullivan Construction.

We look forward to welcoming you as we open our doors and celebrate this new chapter together!

The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office would like to take a moment to thank our Animal Control Office during Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, April 12th through the 18th.

These Animal Control Officers work behind the scenes every day to care for animals in our community whether that means picking up strays, responding to injured or lost pets, or handling serious cases of neglect and abuse. Their commitment to animal welfare doesn’t always get noticed, but it makes a real difference. We’re truly appreciative of everything they do and proud to have them as part of our Department.

In February of 1850, California’s first 27 counties were established, including Colusi County, later renamed Colusa County in 1856. That moment marked the beginning of our county’s long and proud history.

Our first county seat was located at the Monroe House in Monroeville, which at the time was part of Tehama County territory (now Glenn County). The Monroe House served as the center of county government, while also operating as a saloon, hotel, store, and post office. In November 1853, the county seat was moved to the Town of Colusa.

Law enforcement in Colusa County began on February 18, 1851, when John F. Willis was appointed as Colusa County’s first Sheriff. In 1854, the first official jail and courtroom were built on Market Street in Colusa , a two-story wooden building located near where our Hall of Records and Superior Courthouse stand today.

This year, we are proud to celebrate 175 years of serving our community. To honor this milestone, our Deputies and staff members are wearing commemorative 175th Anniversary badges and uniform patches throughout the year. These represent not only our history, but the continued commitment of the men and women who serve Colusa County every day.

Thank you to our community for your support past, present, and future.
