****UPDATE****** Gillette Lake Boat Launch has reopened to the public ahead of schedule! The boat launch repair activities are complete. Please boat safely.******

The Gillette Lake Boat Launch will temporarily close beginning today, August 12, 2026 for maintenance and improvement activities. The area will reopen to the public on August 26, 2026.

The maintenance planned for this period requires a low water level on the lake, making the summer season the best window to make repairs and improvements. Improvements to the facilities include better access to the boat ramp and low water boat launch capability. Visitors are advised to stay away from heavy equipment and project areas near the water.

At 12:01 am on Friday 07 August 2026, all lands on the Colville National Forest will be in Public Use Restrictions (PUR) Level 2.
PUR2 restricts fire activity to liquid gas or propane stoves for cooking; liquid gas or propane fire pits used in developed recreation sites; and limits on internal combustion engine use, among other restrictions. More information is available on the Colville National Forest website at:

Saturday 1 August, the US National Weather Service Spokane Washington has issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Red Flag Warning. A PDS Red Flag Event is not routine, it signals a rare, exceptionally dangerous fire-weather event requiring immediate public attention and action. The interagency fire community stresses that preventing new ignitions is the most effective way to protect communities and support firefighter safety during this high-risk period.

Monitor emergency alerts and updates from your local and state authorities. Follow all posted land-use restrictions and fire safety regulations. Stay alert if you live in, work in, or travel through high-risk areas. Wildfire conditions can change quickly. Stay informed, stay prepared, and remain vigilant.

The Bead Lake Boat Launch will temporarily close beginning July 27 for maintenance and improvement activities. This closure includes the public parking area next to the boat ramp. The area will reopen to the public on September 1, 2026.

Bead Lake is a popular recreation site located on the Newport–Sullivan Lake Ranger District. Recreators can still access the surrounding area by parking at the Bead Lake Trail Head. The maintenance planned for this period requires a low water level on the lake, and visitors are advised to stay away from heavy equipment and project areas near the water. Improvements to the facilities include better access to the boat ramp, low water boat launch capability, and upgrades to the existing potable water system, among others.

Effective tomorrow, July 24, the Colville National Forest enters stage one fire restrictions.

Human-caused fires are preventable, and we all have a role to play in reducing the risk of wildfires. It is essential to be aware of fire restrictions before visiting National Forests and to take every possible measure to protect our cherished forests and communities from the devastating impacts of wildfires.

Wildfire Smoke Supplies Available at all Health District Offices

📍 Free masks are available.
📍 Free filters are available to help you make a box fan air cleaner.

The most effective ways to protect yourself from wildfire smoke are to stay indoors with cleaner indoor air, limit time outdoors, and reduce physical activity.

Using Masks During Wildfire Smoke
😷 If you must be outside in smoky air, masks may help - but not all masks offer the same protection.

🔸NIOSH-approved N95 respirators provide the highest level of protection and must seal tightly on your face.

🔸Other masks, such as surgical masks or cloth masks, may not filter the fine particles in wildfire smoke.

🔸Masks can also make breathing harder, so anyone with lung or heart disease should check with their health care provider before using one.

Gypsy Meadows Camping Area on the Newport-Sullivan Lake District will have some sections reserved for administrative use...

Gypsy Meadows Camping Area on the Newport-Sullivan Lake District will have some sections reserved for administrative use in the upcoming weeks.

The lower portion of Gypsy Meadows will be reserved from July 20th to August 6th for a fisheries crew that is working on a project in the Sullivan Creek area.

The upper meadow portion will be reserved for two separate trail projects. That portion will be reserved from July 21st to July 27th, and also from August 11th to August 16th, for trail crews that will be clearing trails in the area.

Although those campsites listed above will be reserved and unavailable to the public, there are approximately 30 free campsites available along Sullivan Creek in that general area that are available on a first come/first served basis.
