Comanche County Sheriff's Office Clarifies Participation in 287(g) Program Under Texas Senate Bill 8
Comanche County, TX — In response to recent media coverage, the Comanche County Sheriff's Office wishes to provide clarity regarding its participation in the federally authorized 287(g) program under Texas Senate Bill 8. This legislation, signed into law in 2025, mandates that all Texas sheriffs operating county jails must request and enter into a 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Noncompliance may result in legal action by the Texas Attorney General beginning December 1, 2026. The Comanche County Sheriff's Office will operate under the Warrant Service Officer (WSO) model, which is strictly limited to actions within the jail facility. This model ensures that only individuals lawfully arrested for criminal offenses and who meet specific Department of Homeland Security criteria are subject to ICE detainers—and only after local charges are fully adjudicated.
Although our formal agreement was finalized this past week, this process has been in place since January 2025, with our office working closely with prosecutors and courts to ensure timely and lawful case resolution
Additionally, the Comanche County Sheriff's Office affirms its unwavering commitment to ethical law enforcement practices. In accordance with Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Article 2B, racial profiling is strictly prohibited. Our office does not participate in, nor condone, any law enforcement action based on race, ethnicity, or national origin. All enforcement decisions are made based on lawful behavior and credible information, not personal characteristics. We remain fully compliant with state law and dedicated to protecting the constitutional rights of every individual in our community.
It is also important to note that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations within Comanche County are conducted independently and do not require prior approval, coordination, or notification to the Comanche County Sheriff's Office. ICE, as a federal agency, retains full authority to operate within any jurisdiction in the United States, including conducting enforcement actions, investigations, and detainer placements. While our office remains committed to lawful cooperation under the Warrant Service Officer model of the 287(g) program, we do not oversee or authorize ICE’s external operations. The Comanche County Sheriff's Office will continue to uphold its responsibilities within the scope of state and federal law, while ensuring that our local enforcement efforts remain focused, ethical, and constitutionally sound.
We understand that recent media reports may have led to questions or confusion regarding the scope and nature of this program. Our intent is to provide further explanation and transparency so that the public has a clear understanding of our role, responsibilities, and limitations. The Sheriff's Office remains committed to lawful compliance, responsible fiscal stewardship, and open communication, and we welcome continued dialogue with media partners and community members alike.

DeLeon City Council Votes to Deactivate Police Department; Contracts Law Enforcement Services with County

Comanche County, TX – September 10, 2024 – The DeLeon City Council voted on Monday, September 9th, to deactivate the DeLeon Police Department and enter into a contract with the County of Comanche for law enforcement services. This decision follows several years of challenges related to staffing and budget constraints.

In May 2024, the City of DeLeon initiated a temporary contract with the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office to provide law enforcement coverage during times when the DeLeon Police Department was not on duty. This arrangement was part of a broader effort to address staffing shortages and recruit additional personnel. The Sheriff’s Office has been handling a portion of calls and duties for over a year prior to this temporary agreement, working closely with both the City Police Department and City Administration to improve public safety.

Sheriff Chris Pounds has played a crucial role in negotiating a fair and equitable contract that balances the needs of the County and the City while ensuring continued safety and protection for all citizens. The new arrangement will provide law enforcement services to DeLeon, with service hours based on call volume and events rather than specific times or days.

Sheriff Pounds is committed to delivering quality service and is requesting the community's understanding and patience during this transition period. His team is focused on enhancing policing strategies and addressing public safety concerns by working closely with local leaders, schools, and residents.

To support the community during this transition, Sheriff Pounds plans to establish dedicated office hours at the previous police station location. These hours will be outside the contracted service times and will offer residents the opportunity to check case statuses, register as s*x offenders, and request records.

For emergency situations, please continue to call 9-1-1. For administrative and non-emergency inquiries, residents can use the following numbers:

Non-Emergency: 254-893-3510 or 325-356-7533

Direct Dispatch Lines: 325-356-2296 or 325-356-5185

Sheriff Pounds and his team are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being throughout Comanche County and committed to providing efficient and effective law enforcement services during this transition.

‼️⚠️The Comanche County Sheriff’s Office is receiving numerous calls from citizens about a jury scam going around the County. The caller is using an App to mimic the Sheriff’s Office number and telling people they have missed jury duty and there is a warrant for their arrest. The caller is then having people either buy gift cards or Bitcoin and send it to another number. The real Comanche County Sheriff’s Office will never call and tell you that you have a warrant and ask you for money. If you are unsure of who you are talking to hang up and call your local law enforcement agency and speak to them directly before sending any money. ⚠️‼️
