Leonard Mendoza shares his vision for Commerce in the Whittier Daily News candidate questionnaire.
Lifelong Commerce resident, former Mayor, and 22.5-year city employee. As Mayor he helped deliver a $7.6 million budget surplus, employee raises with no furloughs or layoffs, nearly 1,000 new homes, 1,200 trees, and the lowest crime rates in Los Angeles County at the time.
If elected, his priorities are clear:
• Tackle the high crime rate through accountability and partnership with all stakeholders
• Control out-of-control spending with responsible budgeting
• Expand affordable housing for residents, seniors, and military veterans
He also advocates for full transparency — every city expense available in ledger format on the city’s website.
Ready to roll up his sleeves and get back to work for Commerce families and city employees.

A life was lost overnight in Commerce.
There was a chain-reaction crash at Sheila Street and Atlantic Boulevard involving a sheriff’s deputy and several cars. One person passed away. Our condolences to the family and to everyone involved.
Please slow down and drive carefully through the area. Share this so neighbors know to take another route while the investigation continues.
