Meet Jacqueline Torres, Dominguez High School Class of 2023 graduate. Watch her video here:
https://youtu.be/SolmtS1y16k

She will be attending California State University, Dominguez Hills in the fall, studying Spanish. She’d like to be a Spanish teacher after college.

Growing up in Compton, she went to Jefferson Elementary, then Bunche Middle School, before attending Dominguez.

In high school, Jacqueline joined the wrestling team and excelled, going to the state finals her junior year and competing at nationals her senior year. Two of the other accomplishments she’s most proud of in high school were getting good grades and being voted prom queen.

Jacqueline values her education because it will help her out in her future. She knows if she has a job she really likes, it won’t even seem like work.

Jacqueline Torres is another Compton Success Story.

2023 CA Teacher of the Year Profile: Catherine Borek is an Advanced Placement (AP) English literature and drama teacher at Dominguez High school in the Compton Unified School District in Los Angeles County.

Borek believes the greatest justice in our society is found in providing an excellent education to the students who need it most. Her mission as an educator is to provide a rigorous curriculum, a beautiful and dignified classroom, and a space where educators feel valued and seen. In her time at Dominguez, Borek and her students have completed the LA Marathon, collaborated with the LA Opera to perform mini-operas, made it to the Poetry Out Loud regionals, starred in a Keurig commercial, published a play with Pen in the Community, and started a rugby club.

“I hope my students know that they are just as worthy of an excellent education as the sons and daughters of supreme court justices, hedge fund managers, and tech company CEOs–because they are,” Borek said. “It is my life’s work to be a part of this mission and to work with others who have the same mission.”

Catherine and the 2023 CA Teachers of the Year will help emcee our California School Recognition Program Ceremony ( )! Read more about our 2023 CA Teachers of the Year: https://www.cde.ca.gov/nr/ne/yr22/yr22rel49.asp
