As May is Lyme Disease Awareness month, it's a good time to remember to take extra steps before going on a hike because you don't want to bring ticks home with you. And part of reducing the risk of ticks depends on what you wear. By wearing long sleeves and long pants, and tucking the shirt into the pants and your pant legs into your socks, you can reduce the amount of exposed skin, which reduces the chances of bringing ticks home.

East Bay Regional Parks officials are encouraging residents to be on alert for ticks in grassy and wooded areas. The western black-legged tick is the major carrier of Lyme disease in California.
