Fish Migration Day is only one day away! Tomorrow's event features speakers Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino, founders of Cafe Ohlone ()!

Through their work, they aim to foster understanding of and respect for Ohlone people and culture through cuisine. With their mak-warép Ohlone Land Conservancy, they are also working toward the reaquisition and restoration of land. This effort has brought back cultural fire, native plantings, and cultural tending to Cafe Ohlone, the UC Berkeley Russell Research Station, and the ecocultural garden at Cal State East Bay Concord, where the CCRCD is also a project partner!

Can you identify this frog?

The California red-legged frog (Rana draytonii) is the largest native frog in the western United States. Identified by their red legs and abdomen, these amphibians were listed as a threatened species in 1996.

This unique species spends most of its life in or near water, especially creeks and livestock ponds, that serve as their primary breeding sites, highlighting the need for habitat restoration and protection.

Did you know that many of Contra Costa County's waterways are home to turtles?

Shown here, a native Western Pond Turtle (left) attempts to share a rock with a Red-eared Slider (right), an invasive species. These species compete for food, nesting habitat, and basking sites.

The Western Pond Turtle plays a key role in supporting their local ecosystems. They stabilize the food web and also help with water quality and nutrient cycling. By keeping our local creeks clean, environmental stewards can protect this species, helping our ecosystems thrive!

CCRCD staff recently ventured out into the rangelands of Contra Costa County for eDNA pond sampling!

Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling is a noninvasive process used to measure biodiversity within bodies of water. Livestock ponds around the county often double as drinking water for livestock and as habitat for many species of amphibians, insects, and other threatened and endangered species!
