Some piping plover nests on New Hampshire beaches now have a little extra protection. These protective exclosures help keep some predators out while adult plovers continue incubating their eggs. For a threatened shorebird nesting on busy beaches, every successful nest matters.

Thank you for helping give these tiny beach residents a safer chance.

Habitat That Supports Wildlife AND All Sportsmen and Women
Healthy wildlife starts with healthy habitat!

The Wildlife Habitat Program manages woodlands, fields, shrublands, and young forest across NH—improving food sources, cover, and nesting habitat for game species from deer and bear to grouse and turkeys. This work is supported by the $2.50 wildlife habitat license fee on hunting and trapping licenses.

We estimate that it will cost $250,000 annually to maintain these habitats on the 62,000+ acres of Wildlife Management Areas across the state – about twice the revenue we get annually through the wildlife habitat license fee. Revenue is not keeping up with expenses, impacting our ability to improve habitat that directly benefits hunters, trappers, and outdoor enthusiasts who rely on it.

📸 A specialized mulching mower maintains young forest habitat at the Cocheco River WMA in Dover. After mowing, the stumps and roots send up new shoots to create thick, lush young forest habitat for upwards of 60 different types of wildlife who need it including ruffed grouse and woodcock and many colorful songbirds.

Free Fishing Day NH is Saturday June 6th!

New Hampshire has more than 4,800 active and inactive dams, many built during the Industrial Revolution. While some still support recreation and community needs, many older or unused dams block fish from accessing essential habitat. Removing unsafe or outdated dams can reopen miles of river, improve water quality, and help restore native fish populations.

Breeding season continues on NH's beaches. A few nests have been lost to predation but others have eggs and new breeding pairs are still forming. Protected beach areas give these birds a chance. Help us protect them.

Celebrating More Than 25 Years of Impact
For more than 25 years, NH Fish and Game’s Wildlife Habitat Program has been one of the Granite State’s strongest conservation success stories.

Built on a modest $2.50 wildlife habitat license fee on hunting and trapping licenses implemented in 1999, the program has conserved 35,000 acres solely with the help of wildlife habitat license revenue, stewards 90,000+ acres total, and leveraged federal funds to triple the investment of sportsmen and women.

A lot has changed in the last 27 years, but that $2.50 has remained the same. With inflation, the buying power of $2.50 has been cut in half, impacting the work we can do to benefit NH’s wildlife and hunters, trappers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

📸The 3,200-acre William B. R***r Jr WMA was the last property purchased with help from the wildlife habitat license fee in 2016.
