The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office was honored to participate in the Special Olympics North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg and Opening Ceremony held in Raleigh on Friday, May 29.
Sheriff Van Shaw had the distinct honor of participating in the lighting of the cauldron, a long-standing tradition during the 2026 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games Opening Ceremony.
Deputy Kelly Schroeder, alongside a Davidson County Special Olympics athlete, was selected to represent Special Olympics North Carolina at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota later this month, June 20–26. Together, they had the honor of carrying the Flame of Hope and leading the Final Leg run in support of Special Olympics athletes across North Carolina and beyond.
The Flame of Hope symbolizes courage and the celebration of diversity while uniting communities through inclusion and support for Special Olympics athletes.
We appreciate all of the deputies who participated in this year’s Torch Run and continue supporting the mission of Special Olympics North Carolina.
