Today, the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office pauses to honor the life and service of Concord Police Patrolman William J. Kearns, who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 2, 1899.

Patrolman Kearns was returning to duty at the railroad depot when he encountered three men causing a disturbance on West Depot Street, now known as Cabarrus Avenue West. While attempting to take the suspects into custody, he was tragically shot and killed.

We remember Patrolman Kearns for his courage and dedication to serving our community. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office congratulates Chief Deputy Tessa Burchett on her retirement, recognizing more than 28 years of dedicated law enforcement service.

Chief Deputy Burchett began her law enforcement career in 1998 with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department before joining the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office in 1999, where she was assigned to the Patrol Division. Other assignments soon followed, including serving as a DARE and School Resource Officer and Community Policing Deputy before being promoted to Detective in 2006.

In 2009, she was promoted to Sergeant of the Sheriff’s Office Community Policing Division. In 2013, she was promoted to Lieutenant of the Community Policing Division, where she managed all day-to-day operations and administrative duties for the Division. In 2019, she was promoted to Captain of the Field Operations Division, which included Patrol, Criminal Investigations and various special teams and administrative programs.

In 2023, Chief Deputy Burchett made history as the first female Chief Deputy in the history of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. In this role, she oversaw all operations of the Sheriff’s Office, including personnel, finance and budget development.

During her career, Chief Deputy Burchett also became a Certified Law Enforcement Instructor and Specialized Physical Fitness Instructor. She served as a Crisis Negotiator and later became the team’s Lead Negotiator. She was instrumental in the development of the Sheriff’s Office Summer DARE Camps and served on the State of North Carolina DARE Executive Committee, National Safe Kids Coalition and Cabarrus County Safe Schools Task Force.

Chief Deputy Burchett has made a lasting impact on the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. She has been at the forefront of advancing new programs and technology and has been an advocate for employee health and wellness. Her leadership and guidance have impacted so many of her fellow employees and are only surpassed by the compassion and kindness she has shown to those around her.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office congratulates Senior Deputy Thomas Norman on his retirement, recognizing more than 30 years of service to his country, the State of North Carolina and the citizens of Cabarrus County.

Senior Deputy Norman began his law enforcement career with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office in 1999, following two years as a Detention Officer with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. During his initial time with our agency, he earned the Top Gun Award in Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET), was named Rookie of the Year and served as the first medic assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT).

In 2001, he joined the Concord Police Department, serving as a Patrol Officer and later a School Resource Officer before returning to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office in 2009. Since returning, he has served in the Detention Center, Patrol and Civil, and concludes his career in the Youth Development Division. He also earned his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and advanced to the rank of Senior Deputy.

His commitment to service began even earlier through six years in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, adding to a career dedicated to helping others and serving his community.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office recently celebrated the retirement of Captain Sherry Nash, honoring more than 18 years of dedicated service to our agency and the citizens of Cabarrus County.

Captain Nash began her career with the Sheriff’s Office in 2008 as a Detention Officer. In 2010, she became a Deputy assigned to the 911 Communications Center before attending Basic Law Enforcement Training in 2011 at the age of 40, proving it is never too late to pursue a career goal. The following year, she transferred to Patrol, where she later served as a Field Training Officer, helping train and mentor deputies beginning their careers.

Her dedication and leadership continued to guide her career as she was promoted to Sergeant in 2019, Lieutenant in 2022 and Captain in 2025, ultimately serving as Captain of our Harrisburg Division.

Throughout her time with the Sheriff’s Office, Captain Nash remained committed to training, mentorship and supporting those around her. She earned numerous certifications and devoted countless hours to instructing others through the Detention Officer Certification Course and Basic Law Enforcement Training. She also led our Critical Incident Peer Support Team, providing guidance and support to fellow employees during some of their most difficult moments.

Her commitment to continued professional development included completing the Public Safety Leadership Institute and earning the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy.

While her career includes many accomplishments, Captain Nash will tell you the people are what she is most proud of—the friendships she built, the deputies she mentored, coworkers who became family and the relationships she formed throughout our community.

A lifelong Cabarrus County resident, Captain Nash now looks forward to spending more time with her family, including her two daughters and four grandchildren who know her best as “Mimi.”

Last week the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Run For Your Life to host a Mobile Shoe Fitting event for our employees!

Employees had the opportunity to schedule appointments for personalized arch mapping and gait analysis, along with expert guidance to help find the right shoes for their running and walking needs. Run For Your Life also provided lunch, discounted footwear and a few fun swag giveaways for our employees.

We appreciate Run For Your Life partnering with us to support the health, fitness and overall wellness of our employees.

Today is National Dog Day, and we’re celebrating the hardworking K9s of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office and the dedicated handlers who train and serve alongside them.

Our K9 teams put in countless hours of training to stay prepared to serve our community, but there’s plenty of personality behind the badge, too!

In honor of National Dog Day, we’re sharing a few fun facts to help you get to know our K9s a little better.

It’s a new school year in a brand-new space for Mary Frances Wall Center!

Last Monday, students returned for their first day of school at Mary Frances Wall Center’s new facility, located at 87 Palaside Dr. NE in Concord. While the building may be new, students and staff were welcomed back by a familiar face—School Resource Officer Deputy Bre Calabro.

Deputy Calabro served the Mary Frances Wall Center community throughout the previous school year at its former location and has made the move right alongside them. As she begins another year serving the school, she remains committed to supporting students and staff, building positive relationships and helping maintain a safe and welcoming school environment.

We’re thankful for Deputy Calabro’s continued dedication to Mary Frances Wall Center and wish students and staff a safe, successful and memorable school year ahead!
