The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office was honored to participate in the Special Olympics North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg and Opening Ceremony held in Raleigh on Friday, May 29.

Sheriff Van Shaw had the distinct honor of participating in the lighting of the cauldron, a long-standing tradition during the 2026 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games Opening Ceremony.

Deputy Kelly Schroeder, alongside a Davidson County Special Olympics athlete, was selected to represent Special Olympics North Carolina at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota later this month, June 20–26. Together, they had the honor of carrying the Flame of Hope and leading the Final Leg run in support of Special Olympics athletes across North Carolina and beyond.

The Flame of Hope symbolizes courage and the celebration of diversity while uniting communities through inclusion and support for Special Olympics athletes.

We appreciate all of the deputies who participated in this year’s Torch Run and continue supporting the mission of Special Olympics North Carolina.

Today is World Bicycle Day! 🚴

Did you know the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office has a Bicycle Unit? Formed in 2022 and currently made up of five team members, our Bicycle Unit helps patrol county parks and downtown areas around the Courthouse during the summer months when school is out, along with community events throughout Cabarrus County.

You may have seen our deputies riding at events such as the Harrisburg 4th of July Celebration, the Cabarrus County Fair, and local Christmas parades in Mt. Pleasant, Concord, and Kannapolis. The unit also recently assisted in supporting the North Carolina Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run in Raleigh on May 29th.
Beyond patrol and special events, our Bicycle Unit enjoys connecting with the community and teaching bicycle safety to youth and families throughout the year.

Our next bicycle safety event, Ride With A Deputy, will be held on Thursday, July 23rd from 9–11 a.m. at Harrisburg Park located at 191 Sims Parkway, Harrisburg, NC 28075. This free event is designed for elementary-aged children and their parents, with more information coming soon!

We appreciate the opportunity to engage with our residents while helping promote bicycle safety and safe riding habits throughout our community.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Youth Development Division and staff would like to wish all students and families a fun, safe, and relaxing summer break!

While school may be out for the summer, our School Resource Officers continue working hard throughout the break preparing for the upcoming school year and staying active in the community through youth outreach and education. From visiting daycares to teach important safety lessons to preschool-aged children, to hosting summer camps that help elementary and middle school students build positive relationships while learning about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, our team remains committed to supporting and investing in the youth of Cabarrus County all summer long.

We are also excited to be hosting a D.A.R.E. Summer Program this year and look forward to continuing to make meaningful connections with students across our community.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer, Cabarrus County! 🌞

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office was proud to continue supporting Special Olympics North Carolina and Special Olympics Cabarrus County during Young Athletes Day held May 13–15 at the Mary Frances Wall Center.

Young Athletes is an inclusive early childhood sports and play program for children ages 2–7, with and without intellectual disabilities. Through games, songs, and fun physical activities, children are introduced to basic sports skills while building confidence, social interaction, and teamwork in a supportive environment.

Programs like Young Athletes help children develop gross motor skills, encourage socialization, and prepare participants for future involvement in sports and other activities.

We are always honored to support the athletes, families, educators, volunteers, and organizers who make opportunities like this possible throughout our community.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind residents to use caution when using Bitcoin ATMs, especially if you are being instructed by someone else to send money through one. Scams involving Bitcoin machines continue to rise, and once funds are sent, they cannot be recovered.

Scammers may claim you owe money for jury duty, a warrant, bond payment, an emergency involving a loved one, or even an investment opportunity. In many cases, they will pressure victims to act quickly and direct them to a Bitcoin ATM to send payment.

In an effort to increase awareness and help protect our community, the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office has placed warning labels on Bitcoin ATMs throughout Cabarrus County encouraging users to stop, think, and verify before sending money.

If someone is demanding payment through a Bitcoin ATM, take a moment to pause and make sure the request is legitimate.

If you believe you may be the victim of a scam, please contact the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office at (704) 920-3000.
