Below is the official NH Legislative Youth Advisory Council statement on the language of HB544 - the "Propagation of Divisive Concepts" bill that has now been incorporated into the House budget. After hearing multiple perspectives, asking questions, researching independently, and deliberating extensively amongst ourselves, we voted to oppose the language of HB544 for the reasons we will detail in our statement. We urge legislators to stand against its inclusion in our state budget so we can work towards a world where diversity, equity, and inclusion are each a reality for all individuals. This cannot happen if we ignore systemic inequalities, if we prevent civic discourse, if we create a culture where educational institutions are no longer places where we can learn and discuss about our nation’s unvarnished past and present so we can work towards a better future.
