Day #5:
The Big 5 ™ Step 5:
Hold a job or have a responsibility outside of school (minimum 10 hours per week)
If you are able to maximize your participation in activities, sports, community service and still maintain academic excellence, then consider getting a job or a responsibility outside of school. All jobs are not created equal so only get a job that fits your schedule without compromising your participation in other activities and clubs significantly.
Many students consider devoting themselves to creating a Vlog, You Tube Channel, or online gaming. Whatever your interests are, the goal is to commit to it with 5-10 hours per week if possible. One of my former students is now a Youtube sensation with other 1.6 million subscribers. She is making the most of her Youtube success and has mastered Youtube, video production, public speaking, editing, etc. This is a great way to learn new skills and create content at the same time. Be sure to log your hours as you create materials, upload content, and research for your next venture.
Also, in this step, create your resume if you do not have one already. Resumes are a great way to highlight all of your school and other accomplishments in a succinct way. The more activities you participate in, the more extensive your resume will be. Over the years, it will build to more than one page and will serve as an introduction document to future employers or internship sites.
