Vegetation Fire Near Somersville Road in Antioch- May 27, 2026

Just after 1:00 p.m., Contra Costa Fire responded to reports of a vegetation fire burning near Somersville Road in Antioch. Initial callers reported a small grass fire, with nearby work crews attempting to stop the fire’s spread.

The first arriving crews encountered approximately 1 acre of burning grass with moderate rate of spread on a slope, prompting additional resources including a dozer and helicopter response. Firefighters worked multiple flanks of the fire while navigating challenging terrain, drainage areas, and nearby power lines.

A second alarm was requested as crews established divisions for fire attack. Firefighters successfully contained the fire at approximately 5 acres, preventing further spread into nearby areas. Crews remained on scene for extensive mop-up operations due to hazardous conditions and downed power lines in the area.

No injuries or structure damages were reported.

The fire was determined to be accidental from someone performing w**d abatement work involving mowing equipment.

As temperatures rise and vegetation continues to dry out, Contra Costa Fire reminds the public to use extra caution when performing w**d abatement or yard work:
• Perform mowing and w**d cutting during the cooler morning hours whenever possible.
• Avoid mowing during hot, windy, or dry conditions.
• Keep a water source and shovel nearby while working.
• Inspect equipment regularly and ensure blades are not striking rocks or metal objects that can create sparks.
• Never leave equipment running unattended in dry grass.

Contra Costa Fire, in partnership with the Contra Costa Fire Foundation, proudly hosted the second annual Girls Empowerment Camp earlier this month!

Campers from across the county spent two action-packed days learning CPR, throwing hose, climbing ladders, using extrication tools, and performing search and rescue! More than just hands-on skills, the camp built teamwork, confidence, and inspired youth to see themselves in the fire service.

Contra Costa Fire’s heavy equipment operators recently assisted with containment line construction in Arbuckle for an upcoming regional firing operations class. All of the dozer operators, and worked together to help prepare for realistic, hands-on wildfire training that strengthens coordination, readiness, and response capabilities across agencies.

What are firing operations? 🔥

During wildfires, firefighters may intentionally set controlled fires to remove vegetation ahead of the main fire. This helps slow the fire’s spread, protect communities, and strengthen containment lines.

These carefully planned operations are conducted by trained personnel and are an important tool in wildland firefighting.

(Martinez, CA) – On Tuesday, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors appointed Aaron McAlister as Fire Chief of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire).

McAlister has served with Con Fire since 2016 and most recently served as Deputy Fire Chief of Administration, overseeing Communications/Fire Dispatch, Information Systems, Support Services, Finance, and Human Resources. Prior to that, he served as Assistant Fire Chief and played a key role in strengthening the District’s operational readiness, facilities, staffing, and regional coordination.

During his tenure, McAlister helped lead major district advancements, including the annexation of the East Contra Costa and Rodeo-Hercules fire districts and the service contract with the City of Pinole. He also supported the expansion of firefighting resources, staffing, facilities, and emergency services, while
advancing wildfire mitigation efforts and helping establish more than 40 Firewise communities.

“Chief McAlister has demonstrated strong leadership, operational expertise, and a deep commitment to public safety throughout his career with Con Fire,” said Board Chair Diane Burgis. “Through a highly competitive selection process, he distinguished himself as the top choice to lead the District. His experience and vision will help ensure Contra Costa County continues to deliver the high level of fire protection and emergency services our residents depend on every day.”

Before joining Con Fire, McAlister served as Fire Chief for the City of Dixon. McAlister replaces Chief Lewis Broschard, who retired in March after more than 30 years in the fire service, including 18 years with Con Fire. Broschard briefly returned in an interim capacity to support leadership continuity during the transition.

“I am honored by the Board’s confidence and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Fire Chief,” said McAlister. “Con Fire’s firefighters, dispatchers, fire prevention staff, support staff, professional staff, and leadership team are among the very best in the fire service. I look forward to building on our strong
foundation and continuing our mission of protecting lives, property, and the environment throughout Contra Costa County.”

McAlister holds a Master of Arts in Homeland Security from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento. He is a Certified Fire Chief through the California State Fire Marshal and holds a Chief Fire Officer credential from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

The cost of this position for the remainder of the fiscal year is approximately $79,324 with the total ongoing cost projected at $634,595 annually. Funding for this position is included in the District operating budget.

Contra Costa Fire provides fire protection and emergency medical services to more than 790,000 residents across 13 cities and 11 unincorporated communities throughout Contra Costa County.

Today, and every day, Contra Costa Fire remembers Jim Capra.

James "Jim" Capra grew up in a firefighter family, where his father was an Engineer with the Berkeley Fire Department. He began his career with Contra Costa Fire in 1973. One of Jim’s proudest moments was in 1995 when he testified before the California Legislative Committee on the Infectious Disease Presumption Bill, and in 2004 when the IAFF produced a training video for the prevention of infectious diseases: “The Jim Capra Story.” Jim was known for always putting the needs of others before himself.
