The Tuftonboro Hazardous Materials Operations class wrapped up on Saturday with testing. Yesterday, we hosted a huge milestone for the Recruit School program: 50 years of firefighter training! The Class of 1976 represented the beginning of formal firefighter training. Since then, hundreds of students have passed the program and gone on to fire departments across New Hampshire.

Yesterday, June 11, was the official 1976 graduation date, so we invited members of the 1976 Recruit School class and their friends and families to celebrate. Governor Ayotte, Department of Safety Commissioner Quinn, Bedford Fire Chief Fraitzl, and retired firefighter Wiggin and retired Goffstown Fire Chief Nault of the Class of 1976 all spoke on the 50 years of progress in improving New Hampshire fire training programs.

In attendance was also the upcoming Recruit School class of 2026, creating a group photo that spans 50 years of firefighting service. Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday, and we look forward to continuing to improve firefighter training for the next generation!

It's understood that well-placed handlines are essential to effectively applying water to structural fires, whether it's interior or exterior. Hose Line Advancement & Water Application is a continuing education course for firefighters that goes beyond the basics to teach the fundamentals of hose stream mechanics, effective use of air entrainment principles, water application patterns, and hose stream angles. This course is a hands-on training where participants will be putting these principles into action through simulations.

Location: Richard M. Flynn Training Facility, Concord, NH

The Firefighters First Cancer Screening Initiative saw 1,186 firefighters screened over the Spring 2026 appointment schedule! As we prepare to open appointments for Fall 2026, the program administrator, United Diagnostic Services, will be hosting virtual program information sessions on July 21 at 1:00 pm and July 23 at 10:00 am. Eligible program participants (active and retired full-time firefighters) will learn how to register for their testing, what the testing will look like, and what to expect after the tests are completed, with additional time for any other questions or concerns.

No pre-registration is required, and links to each of the sessions may be found on the program website: https://www.firefightersfirst.nh.gov/training-informational-sessions

It was a pleasure to host Curt Varone of the Fire Law Blog last week! His seminar on "Managing Disciplinary Challenges in the Fire Service" took an in-depth and multi-faceted look at the process behind investigating misconduct by firefighters, causes for disciplinary problems, and proven methods for conducting a fair and impartial investigation. We appreciate the fire chiefs, union representatives, and Department of Safety staff members who joined us over the two days and helped prompt discussions around improving disciplinary processes in New Hampshire.
