10-27-2023 ~ Tumco Historic Townsite ~ Winterhaven, CA

Tumco is an abandoned gold mining town and is also one of the earliest gold mining areas in California. It has a history spanning some 300 years, with several periods of boom and bust. Originally named Hedges, the town was completely abandoned in 1905, victim to speculative over-expansion and increasing debt. Renamed Tumco in 1910 -- after The United Mines Company -- another attempt to go after the gold proved just as costly.

By 1911, the diminishing prospects of the mines forced the miners and their families to return to Yuma, signaling the end of Hedges/Tumco as a community.

10-26-2023 ~ The United Territories of the Sovereign Nation of The People’s Republic of Slowjamastan

We were afforded the chance to visit our first foreign nation, and the world's newest. Their infrastructure might be lacking a bit but their strong stance against crocs lets us know they intend to be a serious player on the world stage. Unfortunately His Excellency, Randy “R Dub!” Williams, Sultan of Slowjamastan could not be present. We can only assume he was at a United nations meeting with all that's going on in the world.

10-25-2023 ~ Newberry Springs, CA ~ Memorial Drive, aka, Mrs. Orcutt's Driveway.

Legend has it that when Interstate 40 was being built it was to cut off Mrs Orcutt's home from rt 66. She declined offers from the govt to buy her home. Instead she persuaded the govt to build a 4 mile long driveway from her home to the nearest highway exit.

10-24-2023 ~ Cerro Gordo Mines ~ Keeler CA

As seen on the popular youtube channel, Ghost Town Living. The 8 mile road up and down the mountain is pretty steep at times. often just 1 car width wide so you have to hope nobody else is coming at you around some of the tight corners. Its free to walk around the town and well worth the adventure getting there.

9-17-23 ~ Floyd, VA ~ Iron Furnace

On a rainy, cold sunday we decided to jump in Big Show and make the 2.5 hour drive up to Virginia to find an old Iron Furnace not far off the Blue Ridge Parkway. After traversing some sketchy, 1 car width at times, gravel roads, we came upon the furnace down the embankment from the road along the East Prong Furnace Creek.

It is known that sometime around 1790, Captain Daniel Shelor, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, left Frederick County, Maryland, and came to this land and built the first iron furnace in Southwest Virginia. It is a fact that Captain Shelor owned the property where the present “furnace stack” now stands and it is also a fact that he built an iron furnace and mined ore from this land. Whether or not the present furnace stack stands on the exact location of Captain Shelor’s, I do not know, but if it is, the date of construction would be prior to 1800.
