🚜 SHARE THE ROAD WITH FARM EQUIPMENT 🚜

As planting, spraying, and harvesting activities continue, we are seeing an increase in farm equipment traveling through town. This is especially common between the 100 block of West 5th Street and to the Concordia Terminal in the 1100 block of West 4th St.

Farm equipment is an important part of our community, but it moves much slower than regular traffic. Please help keep everyone safe by remembering these important tips:

• Slow down and be patient.
• Do not pass unless it is legal and safe to do so.
• Watch for wide turns and equipment that may extend into another lane.
• Leave plenty of following distance.
• Stay alert and avoid distractions while driving.

We greatly appreciate our local farmers and all the hard work they put in every day to help feed our communities and keep our local economy strong. As you encounter farm equipment on our roads, please remember that a little patience and courtesy can go a long way in preventing accidents and keeping everyone safe.

June is Internet Safety Month!

The internet is a great place to learn, connect, and have fun—but it’s important to stay safe online.

Parents, one of the best ways to protect your children is by staying involved in their online activities. Know what apps they use, who they communicate with, and what they are sharing on social media. Open conversations and active supervision can help prevent cyberbullying, online predators, scams, and other internet dangers.

• Monitor your child’s social media accounts and privacy settings.
• Talk regularly about online safety and responsible internet use.
• Encourage children to never share personal information online.
• Teach them to think before they click on links or accept friend requests.
• Report suspicious or concerning online activity.

🐾 Meet Loki 🐾

Loki is looking for his forever home!

This handsome boy is well house trained and loves nothing more than being a big couch potato and relaxing with his people. He does great with cats, but Loki would do best in a home without other dogs.

Loki would make a wonderful companion for someone with a fenced-in backyard where he can safely run and play.

And the best part? His adoption fees were generously paid for by Deb Thoman, in memory of her daughter, Alicia Thoman Graff.

This afternoon, Rural Fire District #4 was dispatched to a ditch fire. Lieutenant Adam Sorell responded to assist due to the fire being located next to Highway 81.

The call brought back memories for Lieutenant Sorell, who volunteered with Rural Fire District #4 back in 1997. He even used to drive Truck 402!

Thank you to all of our rural firefighters who take time out of their day to respond quickly and help keep our community safe.

The Concordia Police Department often receives reports from concerned citizens regarding young juveniles driving side-by-sides and golf carts around town. Please keep in mind that under the City of Concordia Ordinance 19-109, all operators of work-site utility vehicles, golf carts, and micro-utility trucks must possess a valid driver’s license in order to legally operate these vehicles on city streets. We ask parents and guardians to help ensure juveniles are operating these vehicles safely and legally.

Below is the City’s ordinance for reference.

19-109. Unlawful operation of work-site utility vehicles, golf carts, and micro-utility trucks.

(a) No work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck shall be operated on any public highway, street or road unless:
(1) The speed limit on such road is 30 miles per hour or less;
(2) The work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck is equipped with lights as required by state and local law for motorcycles, except that electric turn signals and multiple-beam road lighting equipment shall not be required. Ref K.S.A. 8-1801 et seq.;
(3) The operator of the work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck has a valid driver’s license; and
(4) The owner must maintain insurance for the worksite utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck in the same amounts set forth for motor vehicles in subsection (e) of K.S.A. 40-3107.
(5) The owner has registered the worksite utility vehicle, golfcart, or micro utility truck with the City. An annual registration fee of $25 will apply.
(b) Work-site utility vehicles, golf carts, and micro utility trucks shall not be operated in a careless, reckless, or negligent manner.
(c) It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck:
(1) On any interstate highway, federal highway, or state highway, unless engaged in agricultural purposes and pursuant to the conditions listed in K.S.A. 8-15,100 and K.S.A. 8-15,109; or
(2) On any sidewalk, jogging path, trail, or any location normally used for pedestrian traffic.
(d) The number of occupants allowed on a work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck shall be limited to the number of seats factory installed. Bench seats shall be limited to three (3) people.
(e) The provisions of these sections shall not prohibit a work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck from crossing a federal or state highway or a public street or road with a posted speed limit greater than 30 miles per hour.
(f) The provisions of this section shall not prohibit the operation of any authorized work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck in the course of authorized duties within the city of Concordia by a fire department, law enforcement agency, park and recreation department, public works department, or utilities department.
(g) The operation of a work-site utility vehicle, golf cart, or micro utility truck is authorized with the city of Concordia on private property with the consent of the property owner

With severe weather expected, please take time now to prepare yourself and your family.

During severe weather events, our 911 center receives a large volume of calls. Please refrain from calling 911 or our administrative lines for fallen tree limbs, trees, or general power outages.

Please DO call 911 for:
• Downed power lines, especially if they are causing a fire or other immediate danger
• Medical emergencies during power outages, such as individuals requiring continuous oxygen or other critical medical equipment
• Any immediate threat to life or safety

Please avoid driving unless it is an emergency. Officers will be out patrolling areas throughout the city and notifying dispatch of downed trees, power lines, and hazardous road conditions. We will also remain in contact with City of Concordia crews for tree removal when conditions are safe, as well as utility companies working to restore power as quickly as possible.

Please remember that we will post on Facebook when the storm shelter is opened. The storm shelter is located at the Concordia Elementary School FEMA addition on the 11th Street side of the building.

If you hear the tornado sirens, seek shelter immediately in a basement or an interior room of your home away from windows.
