CONCRETE — Concrete’s biggest festival of the year, Cascade Days, drew a massive crowd of excited attendees on Friday and Saturday.

The Concrete Chamber of Commerce hosts Cascade Days, part of a tradition that began in the 1930s to campaign for a highway connecting Skagit County to Okanogan.

In a July press release in anticipation of the event, Concrete Chamber of Commerce President Valerie Stafford said, “What our small town may lack in glitz and glamor, we make up for many times over with unbridled enthusiasm and community spirit.”

Festivities included a softball competition, parade, car show and a variety of activities and competitions for the whole family to enjoy.

At the Concrete Resource Coalition’s booth, recent Concrete High School graduate Ashlyn Morgareidge said this year’s Cascade Days is the busiest she has seen since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
“(It) makes me so happy to see so many things like this coming back after that time period of isolation,” Morgareidge said.
The Concrete Resource Coalition’s booth included a series of large games, such as Tetris and Guess Who.

Concrete Resource Coalition’s Tabitha Walter says the group offers free games and activities, such as Flight from Mordor at Cascade Days, using feedback from local youth.

“Our youth have decided to build on (Flight from Mordor) and offer their own events for our preteens and teenagers who tend to get left out in a lot of the community events,” Walter said.

Along with celebrating local youth, Cascade Days also celebrates the town of Concrete.

The town’s Historic Preservation & Landmarks Commission hosted a free photo booth during Cascade Days, allowing people to take photos in front of local landmarks such as Concrete High School and the silos at Silo Park.
“We are in the process of creating a historic registry for the town of Concrete, so that we can get a lot of our buildings that are not recognized as historic marked that way, and hopefully help bring funding to the town,” said Commissioner Suzanne Summa.

While Cascade Days has concluded, the chamber hosts other events throughout the year.
