I apologize for not posting this before now. For those that don’t know, I’m no longer the Highway Superintendent. It’s been 16 amazing years at a job I’ve loved. I believe we’ve accomplished substantially improving our highway infrastructure as well as the modernization of our equipment, the maintenance of our fleet and the maintenance of our highway facilities

We have a solid accountability of our culverts, signs and street lights using the Geographic Information System (GIS) platform and hopefully the town will eventually have the ability to show the locations of these assets on the town website so residents can easy report problems with a point, click and description of the problem. If you have a driveway culvert problem, when you report it using the GIS, it will generate a work order that the resident can use to track the departments progress on the project.

We are already using this internally. I’ve been able to react to deficiencies noted during road inspections or to phone calls letting us know of problems by using GIS which lets us initiates a work order that goes to the Deputy Highway Superintendents cell phone. We are are able to schedule and track our work much more efficiently.

Any success I’ve enjoyed has always been due to our Highway Crew. I was fortunate enough to inherit a crew with a combination of over 130 years of experience on Conesus Roads. It’s been very tough over the past few years with the retirement of several of these employees however one of the more experienced employees, Dan Marusiak has taken my position as Superintendent and I’m positive he will do a great job. Dan is a hardworking, intelligent, very capable man and I’m positive he will do great

I’m still “hanging” around the Department until spring. We felt that since we had to hire two new employees last fall we didn’t want to try to simultaneously train a third employee. I’ve been told that plowing snow is an easy job - which is so, so wrong. Believe me, the cab of that truck gets to be a very busy place. There are many things to watch and maintain control of - from the amount of material being spread, the speed of the spinner flinging material, to watching out for traffic and of course - mailboxes. Our trucks slip and slide just like your vehicles plus the fact Conesus has some very treacherous roads on very steep hills. I’ve made that turn on top of White Road where it’s very steep and while the tires are going forward and the speedometer says 20 MPH…….the truck is sliding backward and all 80,000 plus lbs is headed towards going over the Hill.

I have truly loved the job. It’s been an honor and privilege to have been able to serve the town I grew up in and came back to after 3 decades in the military. Thank you all for the constant encouragement and support. My wife says it’s time to be grandpa to some grandkids in western Michigan but I’ll always be a Conesus boy at heart

Thank you

As someone who lost everything we owned as well as our beloved pets please help our Firefighters by making sure hydrants are clear and accessible. A fire hydrant would not of helped our situation but it can make life and death difference to other families

Please help us keeping everyone safe! Thank you!

Some great advice

With the impending snow tonight into tomorrow morning, we ask that if you are traveling to give yourself A LOT of extra time. Even though the plows are most likely going to be out, we are assuming driving conditions will be a bit of a challenge.

Here are some other things that we ask:

- If you go off the road, please turn your flashers on and dial 911 to let us know if you are hurt, or need any other assistance.

- We of course will ask you your location and what kind of vehicle you are in.

Both are important so we know where you are and most likely other people will be calling you in for going off the road. At times, people calling in are unsure what kind of car is off the road because they can’t see you very good.

Again, be cautious..give yourself extra time..and be safe.

Thank you!

Organizing our assets into inventories and Geospatial Data;

One of our accomplishments over the past several years has been to conduct an inventory of every culvert in town by type and size, location and physical condition. Every sign including street names as well as traffic control signs by location and physical condition of the signs and posts, and every street light with pole numbers and type of light - that the taxpayers pay for at a cost of at least $11,000 a year.

These inventories did not exist in past years and had to be built from scratch. We finished the actual inventories by 2009 but will always be a work in progress. These inventories are crucial for many reasons including asset accountability, public safety, legal requirements and budgeting purposes just to mention a few.

Over the past 18 months, we have taken these inventories along with our town road state and county road system and with the assistance of Graphic Information System (GIS) Mapping Professional from GioCove Inc. placed these assets at their locations within the township by latitude and longitude.

In addition, the Livingston Country Planning Department has graciously allowed us to include property lines/addresses and owners, the flood planes, the Conesus Lake Watershed and County Hydrography and Livingston County Highway has allowed us to show the County Roads in the township and hopefully they will allow us to show their culverts, etc.

Like any inventory system, this will be a never ending project and will be constantly updated due to new assets being added, older assets replaced and the addition of other assets such as fire hydrants and ponds.

I have attempted to show what we have at this point, in these graphics. Street lights are the round blue dots, culverts are the square dots and signs are indicated with different colored objects as shown in the second graphic.

The cost of using GIS is $600.00 a year plus an additional $100.00 for an additional license that can be used at the Town Offices. Quite economical considering that we are using it to account for over a million dollars in taxpayer property.

My hope is that this will eventually be available to the public. Comments and suggestions are welcome

Our folks finishing up putting the plow frames, plows, wings and sanders on our last two trucks. The other three have been finished for some time but we’ve been finishing up some smaller projects with these. Once set up for ice and snow it can be quite a project pulling them apart and putting them back together if we do need them for dump trucks As you can see it can be a lot of heavy lifting and very hard work.

We also service the equipment before we hang the iron on them - oil, and filters and inspecting lights, belts, breaks, etc. in the hopes we don’t have to fix something on the road in a snowstorm.

While you can’t forget Murphy’s law, we can try to head off potential problems.
