Insulin is required to manitain adequate blood sugars. Many type 1 diabetic people count carbs and deliver their insulin based on foods they eat.

In the words of Olivia Newton- John, “let’s get physical!”…with Parkinson’s Disease.
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a progressive brain disorder that affects the cells that produce dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical that helps control movement. Low levels of dopamine can cause shaking & stiffness, slow movement, balance problems. PD can also create issues with cognitive impairments and affect sleep. Many folks with Parkinson’s Disease also suffer from pain, both neuropathic and/or musculoskeletal pain. Neuropathic pain comes from the nervous system and can feel like tingling, burning, or shooting pain while musculoskeletal pain typically comes from muscles/joints that are damaged or on the verge of being damaged and is commonly an “aching” or sharp with movement pain.
Current research is starting to suggest, though some of it is still in animal trials that exercise can help with managing the pain related to PD by keeping the body & brain stronger and more active. Activities like cycling, strength training, dancing, and balance exercises may improve movement, balance, and stiffness. Some of the studies are even suggesting exercise may help create new connections in the brain and possibly slow disease progression, however more research is needed on that topic.
Jazzercise is offered locally in Conneaut and they have a page, local gyms have exercise bikes and may offer instructor-led cycling courses as well as personal trainers to help with strength training.

Let’s talk about POTS. POTS stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. In short, when folks with POTS stand up their heart rate suddenly & significantly increases. These patients may experience a multitude of symptoms including but not limited to dizziness, fatigue, chest pain, or shortness of breath. Women of child-bearing age are most commonly affected. POTS is often difficult to diagnose due to the symptoms it presents with. While POTS isn’t curable, it can typically be managed through hydration, using compression socks, and for many patients, an increase in salt intake. We advise speaking with your provider for management preferences as well as daily salt recommendations. Low-impact exercise, such as swimming or seated exercises, can also be helpful- just remember to take it slow!
