Umm, y'all.... This happened today.
The NC Wildlife Commission reached out this morning needing immediate housing for these 3 (out of 16) marble foxes.
They were seized from a fur facility and since they are in a mostly healthy condition, the State chose placement over euthanasia.
Two females and one male - all intact for breeding purposes. We were told they have been living separately in a 3x6 enclosure their lives.
There was a scramble here at RRWR to secure as best as possible the large enclosure and section a portion off for the male.
A few more adjustments need to be made but close enough to keep them secure.
Captivity permits for holding will be worked on until there's a final decision on placement - another facility or stay here with us.
The male - darker color/5 years old - seems to be pretty friendly. We're taking it slow to build trust but I think some treats will win him over quickly.
Both females - silver/4 and 6 years old - took themselves under the den with no quarrels at all. One is more skittish than the other and there's some eye goop to monitor. They may take a bit more time than the male.
Steps forward:
1. Allow for them to decompress.
2. Gain trust.
3. Vet trip for a check up, vaccines, etc.
4. Neuter the male.
5. Spay females.
6. Judge each foxes temperament and make some decisions.
While we are thrilled to have them with us, it does take away space and funding from wildlife.
