Fayette County Public Information Statement

Emergency crews are working as quickly and as safely as possible to get roads reopened. Several county roads received significant damage We are asking citizens to refrain from traveling as much as possible to allow crews to continue road clearing work. Residents with known flooding at their residence are requested to refrain from going back into non-safe structures where water and unknown hazards may exist.

Requests are being made through Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s (IDHS) WebEOC for additional assistance with Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster for resources and volunteer management. We are requesting support from IDHS’s Recovery staff to assist with damage assessments for damaged homes.

Travel Advisory - We are moving to an “Orange Watch level” advisory. An Orange travel advisory means: Conditions threaten safety; essential travel only. Only necessary trips, such as going to work, getting medical care, or handling emergencies are recommended. Stay Off Roads: Non-essential driving and routine activities should be paused to keep roads clear for safety crews.

Bridge Closures:

1.5th Street Bridge - open

2.Bridge near 480 South near Nulltown – Impassable unknown length of time to reopen-Bridge received catastrophic damage - Longterm repair.

3.Waterloo Rd. to 440 North to Pennville Rd. – Open

Our goal is to move residents who need more permanent assistance and shelter to the Red Cross facility in Wayne County where they are set up to help both Wayne and Fayette County residents.

Our law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service departments are here for emergency response and should only be called if there is an emergency.

Our county residents are encouraged to call (866) 211-9966 (This is a non-emergency line) to request additional information if they need support with temporary shelter and to report stormdamage.

🚨🚧 CAUTION 🚧🚨

Clean up crews have begun trying to assess and clean the roadways on the east side of town in the Vine St/E 5th St area. This will create some delays for motorists and those who are attempting to get back to their homes.

It is IMPERATIVE that we do not have extra traffic in these areas. Those who are driving through to record, take pictures, or just “look at the damage”, you are slowing down efforts for responders, clean up crews, and those who are attempting to collect what is left of their homes.

PLEASE STAY OUT OF THESE AREAS so we can safely assist in getting people back to their homes in the quickest, most effective way. If you are out of the affected area and wish to help, there are numbers available on the Fayette County Department Of Homeland Security & Emergency Management page to sign up to help and join organized efforts. Please follow their page as important information will be coming in hours and days to come.

At this time both 5th st bridge and veterans memorial bridges are back open for public traveling. Keep in mind the water levels are still higher! So proceed cautiously! Also veterans memorial before the bridge on 121 is missing pavement and has been covered with loose gravel so proceed there with caution as well!! Again at this time both bridges as now passable for public! Vine street and E 5th st both have been reopened as well!!!

Road Update:

Veterans Memorial Road is back open, per Sheriff Zac Jones.

If you’re heading through there, go easy and watch your speed the gravel is still settling, so expect a little loose rock. Safe travels!
