On This Day in History — May 29, 1790

236 years ago today, the United States finally became truly united.
Rhode Island — the last of the original 13 colonies — ratified the U.S. Constitution by the slimmest of margins: 34 to 32.

It hadn't been easy. Rhode Island had rejected calls to ratify more than a dozen times, refused to send delegates to the Constitutional Convention, and even held a statewide referendum that voted it down. The state fiercely guarded its independence and deeply distrusted a powerful central government.

It took Congress threatening to treat Rhode Island as a foreign nation — cutting off all trade — before the state finally came to the table.

When the vote passed that afternoon, church bells rang out across the state. The governor immediately sent word to President Washington. The Union was complete.

236 years later, Rhode Island's story is a reminder that American unity has never come easy — but it's always been worth fighting for.

📜Today in Texas History | May 28, 1861

Today marks the anniversary of the reopening of one of the oldest and most remarkable structures in all of North America — Mission Concepción in San Antonio.

Founded by Franciscan friars in 1716 in East Texas, the mission was relocated to the banks of the San Antonio River in 1731. Its stone church was completed in 1755 and has never fallen into ruin — making it widely considered the oldest unrestored church in the United States.

By the mid-1800s, the mission had fallen into disuse, at one point serving as a barn and then an Army supply depot. In 1855, the Marianist order acquired the property, cleaned and restored the church, and on May 28, 1861 — 165 years ago today — formally reopened it for services.

Mission Concepción also carries a pivotal footnote in Texas Revolution history: on October 28, 1835, Texian forces under James Bowie and James Fannin fought Mexican troops at its walls in the Battle of Concepción — the first major engagement of the Texas Revolution.

Today it is part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On this day in Texas history — May 19, 1836:

The Fort Parker Raid took place in what is now Limestone County during a turbulent period on the Texas frontier. The attack resulted in the deaths of several settlers and the capture of others, including nine‑year‑old Cynthia Ann Parker.

Her life among the Comanche and the later leadership of her child, Quanah Parker, would leave a lasting mark on Texas history.

This event remains a powerful reminder of the conflict and human stories that shaped early Texas.

Did you know?

On May 18, 1835, empresario Green DeWitt—who brought roughly 400 families to settle along the Guadalupe River and helped establish the town of Gonzales—died in Monclova, Coahuila.

His colony shaped early Texas settlement and set the stage for the “Come and Take It” moment later that same year during the Texas revolution.
