Glad these service members can finally get shore leave.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has finally docked in Thailand after a punishing, marathon deployment—its first full port stop after 286 days at sea. And the ship’s appearance tells a story Washington cannot spin away: a hull streaked with conspicuous rust, a crew pushed past reasonable limits, and a Navy being forced to patch together money to sustain operations.

The Lincoln reportedly spent more than 250 consecutive days at sea supporting combat operations in the Middle East. Its roughly 5,000 sailors and service members endured a deployment so prolonged that reports raised concerns about crew welfare and mental-health strain. Recent images and firsthand accounts of filthy, mold-prone living conditions only make the point clearer: the people charged with defending this country are being asked to live and work under conditions that should outrage every American.

Meanwhile, documents and officials describe a Navy so financially strained that money allocated to personnel payroll was temporarily shifted to cover immediate overseas contingencies, with the expectation that it would be backfilled so sailors could still be paid on time. Read that again: the Navy has reportedly had to move money from payroll accounts to keep operations going. A Navy spokesperson says it is actively managing resources and that operations and maintenance funds are not depleted—but no functioning military should be normalizing this kind of financial triage.

Rust on the Lincoln is not the whole crisis. It is the visual symbol of it.
Worn-down ships. Exhausted sailors. Alarming reports of su***de and deteriorating conditions. A service scrambling for money. Senior military leadership destabilized in the middle of sustained overseas operations.

Twenty months into Trump and Hegseth’s stewardship, this is the military they have produced: overextended, under-maintained, financially strained, and stripped of institutional leadership.
