40 years ago on this date... the space shuttle Challenger launched… and the world watched in shock as it broke apart just 73 seconds after liftoff.

A lot of us remember exactly where we were. Schools had TVs rolled into classrooms because Christa McAuliffe was going to be the first teacher in space, and it felt like a big, hopeful moment. Then the trails in the sky split, the screen went silent, and you could feel something was wrong before anyone even said it.

Seven astronauts were lost that day: Francis “Dick” Scobee, Michael Smith, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. The investigation later showed the disaster was caused by a failure in the O-ring seals, something engineers had warned about, which made it even harder to accept.

It was one of those moments that stopped everything. Space no longer felt distant and heroic, it felt real and fragile.

In total, 2,403 Americans died when the Empire of Japan launched an air raid on the U.S. Navy base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The United States declared war against Japan the following day.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, marked annually on the anniversary of the attack, honors the memory of military personnel and civilians who died.

But for American Gold Star Mothers approaching their centennial in 2028, the holidays also bring a profound reminder of the empty chair where a beloved son or daughter should be.

This Thanksgiving, we pause to honor the mothers who feel that void so deeply. Their courage in the face of unimaginable loss, their continued service to others, and their enduring love for their fallen heroes remind others of the true meaning of gratitude.

Happy 250th Birthday, United States Marine Corps!

Today, we proudly celebrate 250 years of honor, courage, and commitment. From 1775 to today, Marines have stood the watch—defending our Nation and upholding the values that define our Corps.

The Marine Corps League joins Marines everywhere in saluting all who have earned the title “Marine.” We honor those who came before us, those who serve today, and those who will carry our legacy forward.

We have been volunteering since 1928 for our Military & Veterans, our Communities and for our Gold Star community. From June 2023-June 2024, our members traveled 55,720 miles for these groups, volunteered 468,603 hours, donated $344,644.85 and gave 124 units of blood!
