At 1130 Wednesday evening TWFD was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 16000 Blk of Pinyon Place. Engine 103 arrived and reported fire showing from the exterior of a first floor chimney chase. The fire quickly extended into the attic of the second story and crews battled the blaze on multiple levels. It took 45 minutes to get the fire under control. No one was injured in the fire but a family of three will be displaced. TWFD was assisted by South Montgomery County Fire Department and Montgomery County Hospital District. Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire

PREVENT A TURKEY FRYER FIRE:
**Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area. Use your turkey fryer only outdoors on a sturdy, level surface well away from things that can burn.
**Make sure to have a “3 feet kid and pet-free zone” around your turkey fryer to protect against burn injuries.
**An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside.
**A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter. Make sure your turkey is completely thawed before you fry it.
Lost dog brought into station 11-4 but chip was not registered. Thanks to a little detective work from the crew... The owner has been found and they will be happily reunited!

Consider using an electric turkey fryer. They take some of the risks out of cooking. But if you do deep-fry a turkey:
• Place the fryer outside, on a flat surface that can’t burn, such
as cement.
• Place the fryer at least 10 feet from anything that can catch
fire. This includes anything overheard like your house eaves or
branches.
• Keep children and pets at least three feet from the fryer.
• Use a fryer with thermostat controls. Without these, the oil can
heat to the point of catching fire.
• Thaw the turkey completely before cooking it so ice crystals
won’t splatter the hot oil.
• Use potholders and oven mitts when handling the turkey.
Happy Veteran's Day! We Salute you!

People often debate the value of Daylight Saving Time. But there’s no debating the value of using this biannual change as a reminder to check your smoke alarm and CO detectors.
In the first nine months of 2020, the U.S. media reported 204 fatalities in apartments and condominiums. While deaths in high rises are generally lower than single family homes, because high rises have a much greater use of fire protection systems; like sprinklers, there are precautions residents should take to be safer in their homes.

It was an Honor to have the Blue Angels fly over a portion of our District today. Even with the ongoing pandemic moments like this continue to bring communities together.
The materials burning inside structures these days are producing more energy and reaching temperature extremes faster than ever before, and for us, that means that we can easily expect flashover conditions to build in the time it takes the fire to get reported and dispatched to the time we arrive on scene and start working. So this week we focused on ventilation training: how to cut a ventilation hole, where to place the hole and what type of ventilation can be accomplished on any given fire. The best way to ensure that everyone goes home at the end of the shift is to do everything possible to dictate the conditions in which firefighters are operating. We’re in the business of shaving seconds off of everything we do, and oftentimes, taking a few extra seconds in the beginning of the fire will drastically save time in the long run. This is why ventilation matters.
It was a sad but exciting afternoon as Deputy Chief Tommy Erickson carried the last of his belongings to his car one last time, only this time with his family providing his ride home, after a total of 41 combined years in the fire service. Chief Erickson came to us after a successful career with the Houston Fire Department. After a brief retirement from there, he answered the call to serve one more time with our newly established career department. Within just a few years, Chief Erickson had developed a training program that became recognized on a national level, often welcoming training officers from all of the United States as they would come looking for guidance on their Departments programs from Chief Erickson. The citizens of South Montgomery County were truly blessed to have had the opportunity to be served by such a fine man. While his presence in the office will be deeply missed, his legacy and mark on the community will remain. Best of times in your retirement Chief.
Everyday in the Fire Service brings something different for our crews. Today firefighters at Station 4 B-Shift were faced with a vehicle that came to the station needing help with an Owl that had been lodged in their grill. Crew members were able to safely free the owl back into nature.
South County crews were busy yesterday responding to 27 emergency responses, including this structure fire at 3am this morning on Spring Terrace Dr. E11-2 arrived first with Battalion 2 to find heavy fire coming from the garage and roof of the residence. Crews quickly began an offensive fire attack. Initially crews were unable to locate the residents, who were then located in the back yard due to the intense heat and smoke they were not able to escape to the front. Crews removed panels of fencing to remove the family to safety. The crews quick action held the fire damage to the garage and attic of the house preventing a total loss of the structure and contents. South County was assisted by The Woodlands Engine 103 while Spring Fire Dept provided coverage to the District during the incident.
Riley Fuzzell remains closed at Spring Creek as Spring Creek continues to rise. Use Grand Parkway if you must be out. Rayford is currently closed at Richards
With all the flooding, even the wildlife are being forced from their natural habitat into more populated ones. Just before 7pm this evening, Ladder 11-1 performed a unique rescue at the Camden at Spring Creek Apartments on Pruitt just west of I-45 where a deer had become lodged in the wrought iron fence. After unsuccessful attempts to free her, the fire department was requested. Crews used hydraulic rescue tools "jaws of life" to widen the fence allowing the deer to run off with no apparent injuries.
L-11-4 is currently on scene of a vehicle fire on Riley Fuzzell near Spring Trails Ridge. Expect heavy delays in the area. This video was sent to us by a resident.
This afternoon a few South Montgomery County Firefighters were treated to live music from Mr Robert Shepard. But this was not the first time these crews had met him, though this was the first time he has spoken with them. On the morning of April 1st 2015 Mr Shepard had arrived at work when he became ill. A little while later coworkers knew something was wrong and contacted 911. Station 11-1 responded along with Montgomery County Hospital District M22. In the 4 minutes it took for the emergency responders to arrive, co-workers had determined that Mr Shepard had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and were now performing life saving CPR. The crews from SMCFD and MCHD continued the care already begun at the workplace. After continuos CPR and advanced life support from MCHD, crews were able to restore a pulse to Mr Shepard. He was then transported to the ER were he continued to receive care for over a week before being released. Mr Shepard wanted to express his thanks to those responsible for giving him a second chance at life. It was emotional at times while each rescuer told their story of that call. SMCFD was glad to be part of this chain of survival and appreciate the opportunity to meet Mr Shepard and see the positive outcome our being here for the community has had on him and his family and would like to recognize Lt Justin Copeland, E/O Wes Baker, E/O Aaron Steely, E/O Chris Watson, FF Joe Stan and FF Matt Sharpe for a job well done on this response, with a survival rate of less than 10% for all patients who experience sudden cardiac arrest this was a special reunion for Mr Shepard as well as our crews.
