The Conway Springs Police Department would like to send out a notice reminding the citizens of the possibility of scam calls. There are 3 main types of calls that have been reported by victims in Conway Springs. The first type of call is the IRS Scammer. The first thing We need our citizens to know is the IRS will never make first contact over the phone. They will mail you notices through the Postal Service multiple times before they attempt to make contact. These callers also request that the victim go to Wal-Mart or Target and get a large sum of money put onto gift cards, which is another thing the IRS will never ask you to do.
The second type of scam calls we've seen are the "Arrested Family Member" calls. The scammer poses as an officer of a Police Department nearby, claiming they have arrested a family member on different charges. They then ask the receiver of the call for bail money in order to release them from jail. Just like the IRS scammers, these are requests that a Police Department will never make. Once Police Departments make an arrest, they will not call family members for the arestee to make arrangements for payments.
The last and least common type of scam calls we have received reports of are the "Yes" Scammers. The first thing these scammers will ask when you pick up the phone is "Can you hear me?". When the receiver of the call says "Yes", the caller says "I'm sorry to hear that." and will hang up. The caller can then use your recorded "Yes" answer, to authorize money to come from accounts they already have the number to.
We stress the citizens of Conway Springs to please share this information, as it is extremely difficult to catch a caller, let alone return any money that has been scammed from you. Sharing this knowledge is one of the few weapons we have right now to attempt to put a stop to phone scammers. Please pass this information along to friends and family so they don't become victims themselves. Thank you and have a great day!
