From Kill the Fire

If you’re one of those firefighters who likes to mask up before you’re ready to breathe from your SCBA, please read this.

Today we did a small drill that included measuring the breathing air inside the regulator opening of the Scott AV3000 SCBA mask while breathing outside air. What we found was that after a 30 second period of physical exertion, the oxygen levels inside the regulator opening dropped below acceptable breathing air levels. This also resulted in a reading of 94% on a fingertip pulse oximiter when placed on the firefighter at the same time.

If you mask up early or while en route and find yourself doing outside physical work (throwing ladders, pulling hose, etc.) you could very well be exposing yourself to oxygen deficient breathing air during that time of physical exertion.

Just something to think about outside of the normal arguments for when to mask up at what point of a fire.
