On November 18 the citizens of Conway voted and agreed to support public safety within the city. There was a lot of discussion among voters, and concerns over how the money would be used if the tax passed. In fact, there were a lot of people who voted against the tax because it did not specifically mention wages and salaries, and the city has a long history of putting its first responders last. But once again, we heard from city council members and the mayor alike, who on multiple occasions said that the tax would free up money in the general fund, and then go towards raises for public safety. And once again, the city promises one thing, and does another. Although the citizens have voted to support their first responders, the city continuously shows that they couldn't care less.
The city of Conway has claimed that they want to resolve the egregious pay gap between the CFD and other similar departments, like North Little Rock. Well it's easy to see that the gap is only becoming greater. While North Little Rock is guaranteed a 5% raise this year, $600 additional dollars towards food salary, and insurance paid after retirement, Conway Firefighters got a 1% raise. And it's not just NLR that values their first responders. Little Rock Firefighters are also guaranteed a 5% raise for three consecutive years, and Benton received a 4% raise this year.
Local 4016 has reached out to numerous council members and expressed our desire to have open communications with the city. This request has consistently fallen on deaf ears, and the city refuses to be transparent and commit to a future plan of action.
This is an election year, and 4 seats for the city council will be coming up. Once again we ask for help from the voters and ask that those seats be filled by people who genuinely care about their first responders, and are willing to step up and make a change. As always, Conway Firefighters look forward to serving the citizens of Conway and thank you for your continued support.
