The Department of Government, Public Service, and International Studies (GPI) hosted the 60th Arkansas Model United Nations (AMUN) Conference at UCA on November 21-22, 2025. Nearly 600 high school students from Arkansas and Louisiana participated in the conference. Attending the opening session on Friday, November 21st were several former AMUN secretary-generals, including Brett Newcomb (AMUN S-G 1968), Larry Lanes (AMUN S-G 1976, and Bill Waddell (AMUN S-G 1977). David Gruber (AMUN S-G 1967) observed committee and plenary sessions on Saturday, November 22nd. Kyle Urban served as AMUN S-G in 2025. Dr. Don Baker, former UCA instructor and AMUN coordinator, gave the keynote address during the opening session. Dr. Baker has been a Foreign Service Officer (FSO) with the U.S. Department of State since 2005. The AMUN was established by Professor Simms McClintock during the fall of 1966. The first AMUN conference was held in January 1967. The second and third AMUN conferences were held in January and December 1968.

The 51st AMUN conference was held at UCA on November 18-19, 2016. Nearly 600 delegates from 27 high schools in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee participated in the conference. Alex Battaglia, a senior majoring in International Studies at UCA, served as Secretary-General. Robert Andrew, U.S. Department of State Diplomat-in-Residence at the University of Oklahoma, gave the keynote address during the opening session on Friday, November 18th. The delegation representing the United Kingdom (Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, TN) was presented the Outstanding Delegation award during the closing session on Saturday, November 19th.

The 50th AMUN Conference at UCA last week was a tremendous success! Some 560 delegates from 29 high schools in Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee participated in the two-day conference. Several former S-Gs, including David Gruber ('67), Brett Newcomb ('68), Bill Waddell ('77), Lisa (Meisenbacher) Dearasaugh ('78), Timothy Troup ('83), David Allen ('84), Preston Scroggin ('87), Randy Grice ('89), Felicia (Scholl) Massa ('90), Robin (Hudson) Gifford ('91), Anatoliy Shatkovskyy ('09), Tyler Bittle ('10), Willis Arnold ('11), Jake Logan ('12), Logan Spurlock ('13), Stephanie Gray ('14), and Breanna Wilbanks ('15), attended the 50th AMUN reception & dinner on Friday evening. Thanks to everyone who helped make the conference a success!

The 49th Annual Arkansas Model United Nations (AMUN) will take place at the University of Central Arkansas on Friday, November 21st and Saturday, November 22nd. Jose Guzzardi, 2006 AMUN Secretary-General and 2007 International Studies graduate from UCA, will give the keynote speech during the Opening Session at 1:00pm in Ida Waldran Auditorium. We are looking forward to seeing several hundred Model UN high school students and teachers from Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.
