The 1886 Charleston Earthquake serves as an important reminder that big earthquakes - although rare - can occur in South Carolina.

Thinking now about all the scenarios, possibilities, and things you can control will give you the ability to focus on the unexpected when disaster strikes.

Include everyone in the household during the planning, and share your plans with friends and family to keep everyone in the know.

A stalled front near the coast could lead to severe weather this afternoon with the main threat being damaging wind gusts🌩️

Send any information to them regarding hail, wind damage, etc.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is currently in effect for southern Horry County. We're looking for damage reports, so if you have large hail or tree damage, please let us know!

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for parts of southeastern/eastern Horry County including areas of Myrtle Beach, Socastee, Carolina Forest and Briarcliffe Acres until 7:30 p.m.

Seek shelter until the storm has passed.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Horry County until 9 p.m.

Make sure you can receive emergency weather alerts should any severe weather warnings be issued.

Seek shelter in the event of thunder and/or lightning.

A Heat Advisory goes into effect at 11 a.m. for Horry County today.

Stay hydrated and take breaks from the outdoors when possible.

There will be a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Frequent lightning and strong winds will be possible.

Heavy rain will be possible as well, as highlighted by the excessive rainfall probability graphic below. Flash flooding could occur.

Remain weather aware.

Another hot day is expected across the region with high temperatures in the mid-upper 90s away from the immediate coast. Somewhat lower humidity should prevent well-inland areas from reaching a 105F heat index for 2 or more hours, but peak values could still reach this high. Otherwise, a Heat Advisory is in effect for the eastern half of the area for heat indices of 105-109F. Isolated pop-up showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon (20-40% chance) as well.
