June Safety Message: Hurricane Season

June marks the beginning of Hurricane Season, and now is the time for our community to prepare, not panic. Severe weather can develop quickly along the South Carolina coast, and being ready ahead of time can make all the difference.

🌀 Why Preparation Matters
Hurricanes and tropical storms can bring:
• Flooding
• Damaging winds
• Tornadoes
• Power outages
• Road closures and dangerous travel conditions
Having a plan before a storm approaches helps keep you, your family, and first responders safer.

✅ Hurricane Preparedness Tips:
• Charge phones and backup power banks ahead of storms
• Know your evacuation zone and routes
• Secure outdoor furniture and loose items
• Fuel vehicles early- don't wait until last minute
• Monitor trusted weather updates and local emergency alerts
• Build an emergency kit with water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents (please check out our post from last month on instructions on how to build one.)

⚠️ During a Storm
• Avoid driving through flooded roads- “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”
• Stay indoors and away from windows
• Do not go outside during the eye of the storm
• Avoid downed power lines and flooded areas

🤝 Community Matters
Check on neighbors, elderly family members, and anyone who may need assistance preparing or evacuating.

It was a fantastic day, out with the kids and teachers of Carolina Forest Elementary School. We gave them a look into what the team does and how we help. And we also talked about what actions to take when you get lost. Of course K9 Cain received lots of pets.

What To Do Before a Hurricane Watch is Issued...

When storms begin forming offshore, supplies can disappear quickly. Preparing early helps avoid long lines, shortages, and last-minute panic.

✅ Before severe weather approaches:
• Fill vehicle gas tanks early
• Refill prescriptions and medical supplies
• Withdraw emergency cash if needed
• Test generators safely outdoors
• Download weather and emergency alert apps
• Make a communication plan with family members

📱 Keep emergency contacts written down in case phones lose power or service.

⚠️ Waiting until the last minute can make preparing much harder and more dangerous.

The more prepared our community is before a storm, the safer everyone will be during one.

Strong winds and flooding can cause major damage during hurricanes and tropical storms. Taking a few steps now can make a big difference later.

✅ Prepare your home by:
• Bringing in or securing outdoor furniture
• Trimming weak tree branches
• Cleaning gutters and drains
• Checking generators and fuel supplies
• Reviewing flood insurance and important documents
• Make sure your home address number is in place and visible

⚠️ Know your evacuation zone before a storm develops, not during one.

A prepared home helps protect your family and first responders during severe weather events.
