Horry County Search and Rescue is a Non Profit Public Service Team, with SAR services available to only First Responders 24/7/365. The primary mission of HCSAR is to safely return a missing loved one to their family, minimize loss of life, injury, and property damage, and provide recovery services as needed—always with concern for the safety of all parties. 🐾🔎 K9 Fun Fact Friday! 🔎🐾

Ever wonder why Search and Rescue K9s are so incredible at finding people?

A dog's nose contains up to 300 million scent receptors, compared to about 6 million in humans! Their brains are also specially designed to process scent information, allowing them to detect and follow odors that we can't even imagine.

Our K9 partners don't just rely on instinct, they spend countless hours training to turn those amazing natural abilities into lifesaving skills. Whether they're trailing, tracking, or searching large areas, these dogs are always ready to put their noses to work for the community.

June Safety Message: Hurricane Season

June marks the beginning of Hurricane Season, and now is the time for our community to prepare, not panic. Severe weather can develop quickly along the South Carolina coast, and being ready ahead of time can make all the difference.

🌀 Why Preparation Matters
Hurricanes and tropical storms can bring:
• Flooding
• Damaging winds
• Tornadoes
• Power outages
• Road closures and dangerous travel conditions
Having a plan before a storm approaches helps keep you, your family, and first responders safer.

✅ Hurricane Preparedness Tips:
• Charge phones and backup power banks ahead of storms
• Know your evacuation zone and routes
• Secure outdoor furniture and loose items
• Fuel vehicles early- don't wait until last minute
• Monitor trusted weather updates and local emergency alerts
• Build an emergency kit with water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents (please check out our post from last month on instructions on how to build one.)

⚠️ During a Storm
• Avoid driving through flooded roads- “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”
• Stay indoors and away from windows
• Do not go outside during the eye of the storm
• Avoid downed power lines and flooded areas

🤝 Community Matters
Check on neighbors, elderly family members, and anyone who may need assistance preparing or evacuating.
At Horry County Search & Rescue, we train year-round to be ready when our community needs us most. Your preparation helps emergency responders!

It was a fantastic day, out with the kids and teachers of Carolina Forest Elementary School. We gave them a look into what the team does and how we help. And we also talked about what actions to take when you get lost. Of course K9 Cain received lots of pets.
