Motor Vehicle Monday: Know Your Plate!

🚗 Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that on April 25, 1901, New York became the first U.S. state to require automobile registration. Governor Benjamin Odell Jr. signed legislation requiring automobile and motorcycle owners to register with the Secretary of State.

But here’s the odd part: New York did not issue a license plate. The vehicle owner had to make their own identification plate. The law required the owner's initials to be displayed on the rear of the vehicle, with the letters at least three inches high.

So a vehicle owned by someone named George F. Chamberlain, for example, could display:

The early plates were not standardized. Owners used materials such as leather, wood, steel, or metal letters, and some simply painted the initials directly onto the vehicle. There was no standardized color, size, or design.

The first known New York registration was GFC, issued to George F. Chamberlain of Harrison, New York, in the first week of May 1901. He reportedly received registration number 1.

By the end of 1901, New York had registered hundreds of automobiles. The system quickly developed a problem: initials weren't unique enough. Multiple motorists could have the same initials, which made identifying a particular vehicle rather inconvenient, because apparently humanity needed several attempts to discover that "J.S." could refer to more than one person.

In 1903, New York changed the system. Instead of using the owner's initials, the state began assigning registration numbers to vehicles. Owners still had to make their own plates, however. New York didn't begin manufacturing and issuing standardized state plates until 1910.
