On Friday, we laid our brother, Firefighter Juan Smith II, to rest.
There are simply no words that can fully express the gratitude we feel for the overwhelming love, support, and honor shown to Juan, his family, and the members of Rockdale Fire Rescue over the past several days. During one of the most difficult times in our department’s history, you reminded us that the fire service is more than a profession—it is a family.
We extend our deepest appreciation to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office for your extraordinary partnership, leadership, and unwavering support throughout this difficult week. From escorting Juan with the dignity and honor he deserved to standing beside our department every step of the way, your professionalism, compassion, and friendship will never be forgotten.
We are especially grateful to the Georgia L.A.S.T. (Local Assistance State Team) and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation for your guidance, compassion, and unwavering support throughout this journey. Your experience, care, and commitment to honoring our fallen while caring for both our department and Juan’s family provided strength when we needed it most. Thank you to National EMS for your support and assistance throughout the week, helping ensure that Juan received the hero’s farewell he so richly deserved.
We are also profoundly grateful to the Conyers Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, the countless law enforcement agencies, fire departments, EMS agencies, emergency communications personnel, honor guards, and public safety professionals from across Georgia and beyond who traveled to stand shoulder to shoulder with us. Your presence was a powerful reminder that no department walks this road alone.
To our elected officials, community leaders, churches, businesses, volunteers, and every citizen who lined the streets, prayed for us, sent meals, made donations, or simply offered a comforting word—thank you. Your kindness and compassion carried us through unimaginable grief and demonstrated the very best of our community.
Juan lived a life of service. He was a devoted son, brother, friend, firefighter, and man of faith whose humility, compassion, and courage left an impression on everyone he met. He answered the call to serve others without hesitation, and his sacrifice will forever be etched into the history of Rockdale Fire Rescue. While we mourn the loss of our brother, we also celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind.
To Juan’s family, thank you for sharing him with us. It was an honor to serve alongside him, and we remain committed to standing beside you in the days, months, and years ahead. You will always be a part of the Rockdale Fire Rescue family.
To every agency, organization, and individual who sacrificed your time, resources, and hearts to honor Juan and support us through this unimaginable loss—please know that your kindness will never be forgotten. You helped us give our brother the hero’s farewell he deserved, and for that, we will be forever grateful.
Juan, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, your friendship, and your unwavering commitment to this community. Though your watch has ended, your legacy will live on in every firefighter who answers the call, every life that is saved, and every act of service performed in your memory.
