The Curious Kid and the Cat ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿฆ‹๐ŸŒฑ

One day, a curious little boy found a monarch caterpillar munching happily on milkweed in the garden. As proud as could be, he carefully picked it up and carried it in his hand.

He wanted to take it home. He didnโ€™t understand why he couldnโ€™t keep his new little friend.

Then a kind stranger stopped to talk with him. Instead of simply telling him to put the caterpillar back, she helped him connect the dots. She told him about milkweed, and how this tiny caterpillar was part of something much bigger happening in nature.

The boy listened. He thought about it.

And then, with a little nudge, he gently returned the caterpillar to the milkweed where he had found it. He even managed to smile. And for one brief second, it appeared that the cat gave him a happy nod.

In the end, the cat turned into a beautiful Monarch butterfly and the boy became a pollinator hero.๐Ÿ’š

Moral of the story: Sometimes it only takes a little encouragement to help a child see the bigger picture. When we foster curiosity, kindness, and respect for nature, we help little hearts learn to care for the world around them. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฆ‹

๐Ÿข๐ŸWetland Wonders was a wild success!๐ŸŒฟ

Our outdoor classroom was full to capacity for this weekendโ€™s reptile program! Attendees got up close and personal with some amazing turtles and snakes while learning all about the incredible creatures that call our wetlands home!

A huge thank you to our special guest educators, Linda May and Daniel Sollenberger of Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Georgia DNR for sharing their knowledge and helping make this such a fun and memorable event. ๐Ÿ’š

So many curious minds, scaly friends, and wonderful wetland discoveries! ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ๐ŸŒฟ

What a fun and productive volunteer workday! ๐Ÿช

The unexpected rain couldnโ€™t stop us from cleaning up and marveling at the beauty around us. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ

Cloudless sulphates, gulf fritillaries and even a pipeline swallowtail made an appearance while we reduced invasives and freed flowers from the chokehold of overgrown morning glories. Fun finds: a giant stick bug, small gray lizard, gold finch and a cloudless sulphur caterpillar (camouflaged to match the yellow flower on its larval host plant.)๐Ÿ›๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฆ‹

We hauled off several pounds of weeds, but the boneset trimmings were saved to make tinctures, adding secondary value to an important pollinator plant! โš•๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ

We also sowed more sunflower seeds and planted a Rattlesnake master, purple coneflowers, more swamp milkweed and a climbing hydrangea.๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒป

Plus, we celebrated one of our volunteers who completed her required native plant certification hours.๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

Many thanks to all of our volunteers and the collective expertise from UGA Extension Rockdale County, Master Gardener of Rockdale County and Stone Mountain Propagation.โค๏ธ

Itโ€™s amazing what you can accomplish in just 3 hours with the selfless support from our community!๐Ÿ‘

Want to join us next time? Send us a message to become a volunteer at Big Haynes Creek Nature Center!๐ŸŒฑ

Our community came out in droves to count! ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒธ Thank you to Alexis Alexander and Philip Hensley, Ag Agent with UGA Extension Rockdale County for sharing their expertise and educating our community about the importance of pollinators as citizens collected data for the Great Southeast Pollinator Census.

There were lots of bees, butterflies, ladybugs and more at Big Haynes Creek Nature Centerโ€™s pollinator education garden! Plus, lots of cool sightings, like a marvelous stick bug!

Mayor Connie Alsobrook also joined us to support this community science activity and delivered a special reading of *The Great Pollinator Census*, written by Susan Edwards Richmond in the childrenโ€™s book circle.

Thank you to everyone who came out to count and celebrate the incredible world of pollinators! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฆ‹๐ŸŒผ
