Edited to add: The State of Tennessee requested an Expedited Major Disaster Declaration on Jan. 28. While Tennessee does not yet have a declaration to provide assistance to individuals and households, we are working with our communities to gather the data necessary to validate our request. This is why we are asking for residents whose homes have been impacted by Winter Storm Fern to report their damages: https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/9d585f7786564e52a34be72254f425ce

But please note: this process does not guarantee assistance.

There's been a lot of confusion online about what storm recovery funding is.

You may have heard we received Emergency Declaration funds. Emergency Declarations are for state and local governments so they can take immediate steps to protect the whole community. They are not for individuals.

Right now, there are no FEMA funds available for individuals.

If you need support, local nonprofits or 211 can help connect you with resources based on your situation.

Our personnel have been out clearing and monitoring roadways. Please listen to this advice!

DO NOT BE FOOLED‼️

We have seen a fair amount of thawing today while the rain has moved through. However, and it’s a BIG however. The temperature has been consistently dropping and will continue to drop throughout the evening and night. We already have many leaning and low hanging trees near roadways. As well as, lots of utility poles and wires with ice on them. It is fully anticipated that not only will the roadways refreeze as the evening progresses, but we will additionally see lots of downed power lines and trees. All of these factors combined with darkness will make travel extremely dangerous to impossible.

Public safety personnel are out across Jackson County and monitoring the situation as it evolves. Plans are in place to deal with and mitigate these issues as best possible.

Travel is strongly discouraged‼️

If you need to report a power outage, please do NOT call 911. Please do so through the after hours number for your service provider.

Stay home, stay warm, and stay safe! 🥶

PREPARATION FOR INCOMING WINTER WEATHER

It is a somewhat rare event for us in the Upper Cumberland to have advanced notice of a large incoming winter weather event. With winter weather comes the possibility and likelihood of traveling becoming dangerous or impossible, power outages, and many more obstacles. A failure to plan is a plan to fail. So, we would like to take this opportunity to provide you with some tips and advice that we believe will be helpful for you to prepare for the upcoming winter weather.

• Have an alternate source of power, such as, generator, natural gas, etc. Be aware of how to operate these in a safe manner.
• If you own a generator now is the time to test, start, and fuel it.
• Have a 7 day supply of fuel on hand for your alternate power source.
• Have a non-electric source of heat, such as, Natural gas or propane heaters.
• Have a 7 day supply of medications on hand and accessible.
• ONLY travel if it is absolutely necessary. In the midst of a winter storm is not the time to run the errands you have been putting off!
• For those who require continuous oxygen, have extra oxygen tanks on hand. Contact your medical supply company ahead of time to find out their procedures for after hours delivery and service.
• Be sure to check on friends and neighbors regularly. Especially the elderly.

We have attached in the photos a list of items from Jackson County Emergency Management Agency-TN that we encourage you to be sure you have in your possession prior to the winter weather arriving.
