A major pattern change will bring a stretch of cool, wet and increasingly fall-like weather to the Pacific and Inland Northwest this week! Tuesday may begin relatively quiet, with scattered showers and an isolated thunderstorm possible, but a stronger system arrives Wednesday, bringing widespread rain, breezy winds and much cooler temperatures. Additional rounds of rain and scattered thunderstorms will continue Thursday, with showers potentially lingering into Friday and Saturday. The coast, Olympics, Coast Range and Cascades will receive the most rain. Many areas could see 1-3 inches, with locally higher totals possible in the mountains and foothills. Interior western Washington and Oregon may receive around 0.50-1.25 inch, while lighter but still beneficial rainfall reaches eastern Washington, the Idaho Panhandle and portions of northern California. Colder air will also lower snow levels to around 7,000 feet at times in the northern Washington Cascades, allowing snow to fall across the highest peaks. Travel across the mountain passes will remain unaffected. Temperatures will run 10-20 degrees below normal. While this rain may not completely end the fire season, it should provide meaningful relief, slow fire activity and help crews working on ongoing wildfires🌧️❄️

PLEASE be smart this weekend with this very high fire danger and high winds. Level 2 Fire Restrictions are still in effect so no non-propane fires at all (including no charcoal grill fires), and if the winds are high, please consider not lighting that propane fire either.

🔥 IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF LANDS STILL SEEKING INFORMATION ON POTLATCH HILL FIRE

The Idaho Department of Lands is continuing to ask the public for help with its investigation into the Potlatch Hill Fire in Coeur d’Alene.

The fire started July 29 on the southwest end of Fernan Lake, east of I-90 and north of E. Potlatch Hill Road.

Investigators are specifically looking for anyone who may have been in the area between 6 and 7 p.m. and noticed anything unusual or out of place.

That could include:

• Vehicles that seemed unusual for the area
• People or activity that stood out
• Photos or videos taken nearby
• Home or business security-camera footage
• Any other information that could help investigators determine what happened

Even something that may have seemed insignificant at the time could potentially be useful to investigators.

The Real Smokey Bear: From Fire to Legend

This post shares a historical story about the real Smokey Bear, an orphaned bear cub who became America’s symbol of wildfire prevention.

In the aftermath of a devastating forest fire in New Mexico in 1950, a small, badly burned black bear cub was found clinging to a tree. Rescuers saved his life, and the cub quickly became a living symbol of wildfire prevention campaigns across America.

Named Smokey Bear, he was moved to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., where he lived for over 25 years. Children and families from around the world visited him, learning his message: 👉 “Only YOU can prevent wildfires.”

When Smokey died in 1976, he was laid to rest at the Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, New Mexico—the very place where his incredible journey began.

Today, Smokey’s legacy still burns bright as the most recognized mascot for forest conservation in the world.

IDL fire investigators would like to talk to this person who was photographed walking by the Saw Mill Fire shortly after it started on July 30. The hope is that she may have seen something that would assist investigators in determining how the fire started.

The Saw Mill Fire started in Coeur d’Alene on July 30. It was located west of Highway 90 between S Backlog Lane and E. Mullin Trail Road.

If you recognize the person in the photo, or if you were in the area on July 30 between 4:40 – 5:30 p.m. and noticed anything unusual or out of place, we want to hear from you. This includes vehicles, people or activities that seemed uncommon or out of place. We are also looking for photos, videos or security footage from the surrounding area.
